Thread: Remove and refit steering wheel

You need to gently lift up the landrover badge on the wheel with a smooth edged screwdriver.

Undo the bolt holding on the wheel and pull it off. It can be a little sticky so you need to push on wheel on one side and pull on the other etc.

Just remember where it is positioned in relation to the wheel position.

Definitely makes it easier when working on instruments.

Buy a special tool.

And follow the attached instructions. (I know that they are for the puma engined defender but I don't think the principle has changed since the steering wheel was invented.)

or if you don't have a special tool have someone whack the back of the steering wheel close to the hub with something weighty whilst you are pulling the wheel towards you... being careful not to break your nose when the steering wheel comes off .

And when your done being gentle, whack and swear and curse and eventually run the winch cable through a series of pulley to rip the damned thing out or tear the car apart.

Sometimes they can get a little stuck.

Hi All

Much safer if you leave the nut loose on the shaft, its easy to take the nut right off then put back on by about three or four turns, before yanking or bashing hard on the wheel.
That way the shape of your nose does stay recognisable to your loved ones.
