Agreed, but The Rover diff is OK in 'Normal' use, but add big tyres and aggressive low range use with a big diesel and , er, well, thats all folks..

So where does the P38a diff as fitted to the Td5 110 from 2003 to 2007 fit into all this?
IIRC they didn't/don't (touch wood) seem to suffer the same troubles as the P38a's fitted to the Puma's.

manufacture of the p38 diff was moved to a diffferent area and I believe its the quality control that has let the puma rear diff down....
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Ummmmm maybe .................. but according to post #5 (and following) by Dave Ashcroft, it sounded more like a design fault which I thought would have been common to both Td5 & Puma.

Must go and search for your trip report and pics from yesterday, hope you had a good day.

Will the earlier longer pinion shaft Rover type diffs fit into a Puma banjo housing? If so it seems that Daves/Ians new crownwheel and pinion in an earlier pinion housing would be sufficient for many owners here.

Not really, quite a bit of PCD and clearance problem, also quite different axle lengths etc so a few mods req also.

They were a fantastically strong diff, as they used a third bearing, that was built onto the nose end of the pinion.

IMHO the half shafts still remained a weak point however.

They were still a spiral bevel diff with the relatively weak 10-47 tooth count though Arther, so not that strong for the size. And nowhere near as strong as a Salisbury. And the tiny little parrallel roller straddle pinion bearing was necessary because just like a 9'' Ford the 2 taper roller pinion bearings were too close together.

Ever see a 9'' Ford pinion lying on the ground underneath a vehicle still attached to the propshaft? That's what happened to a mates 265 Hemi powered Landy some years ago. Std 9'' fords have weak brittle grey iron pinion housings, so the pinion will still walk away from the crownwheel, and pegging the crownwheel won't help the situation either. For that you need an optional nodular iron or aftermarket alloy pinion housing.

Somethings obviously different as Td5's aren't going through 3-4 diff's like the puma's are. Pat

The Pumas are capable of delivering more torque with the more powerful motor and lower gearing.

    Cheers Arthur
