Thread: TD5 Non-starter after new seals ??

Well.... its official. I have tried EVERYTHING. Took it all apart and did it all again. The pump now sounds quite loud (I think "squeals" kinda best describes the sound) for the first couple of seconds during each prime then a quiet hum.....

Could this all have just been a coincidence and something else has buggered up as soon as I did the injector seals? Like the fuel pump of FPR???

Cos, Im really running low on options now!

Thanks for the replies guys and any further info would be greatly appreciated!

Don't run the engine too long like this - no more than a second or 2.

Did you do this Erich is not stupid?

I had a deal of trouble starting my 2001 TD5 after it had been standing for a month or so. Sounded like it was cranking over at a reasonable pace, but would not fire. Did the purging thing 2 or 3 times, still no go.

I happened to have a brand new Optima battery in the shed - so thought I'd give that a try, and it fired up first go!! The old battery didn't seem to be cranking slow, but a whole world of difference with a new fully charged battery.

    So.... how is your battery?

Got two near new kick-ass Century batteries.....

Since it started with the petrol rag, thanks to Erich, I now know it's fuel supply problem somewhere from the tank to the engine , but what is most likely and where should I start looking or replacing?

I guess it was just a coincidence that something else died just as I fixed the injector seals.

    getting desperate...

I changed the fuel filter just to rule out the cheap things first. It made the fuel pump louder, alot of gurgling and squelching, etc. Still no go.

The fuel pump is pumping fuel at a good rate to the filter, but I am unable to test the actual pressure... Should I change the fuel pump, which is a pain on the Deefer, or should I be looking at something past the fuel filter nearer the engine? No leaks at all to speak of by the way.

Mine was doing this, but was not enough pressure. The fuel pump was replaced and it was all good! With the price of fuel pumps, you would want to make sure first! I am no expert though. I hope you get your problem sorted soon!

Fuel pressure seems good at the fuel pressure regulator. Can't specifically test it, but it spurted a fair way.

When I took the injectors out to do the seals again there was diesel in the cylinder head and around the injectors, so I gather it's getting through. Just not sure of the pressure.

The pump seems like the noises its making are getting louder. It really strangles the cat now for the first couple of seconds of priming and as soon as another priming session starts, it does exactly the same thing.

No leaks at all that I can find. I'm thinking the pump is cactus. Is this the most obvious thing? Cos, I now have a choice of ordering a pump and replacing it myself, in the hope that it is right, or getting a tow and the shop to probably replace 5 things that didn't need it and charge through the nose for it. I am sooo sick of the problems with the defender, it's becoming a real burden.
