Doesn;t matter where from - Customs / AQIS/ Dept of transport requirements are the same.

A key issue is one of ownership. If you've owned the vehicle for (I think) 12 months, imporation is less fraught and costly than otherwise. I imported my Defender 90 from the UK and had a fair amount of bureauocracy to overcome. Be prepared to be ripped off at the Australian end too.

I've tried trawling through the customs site to get an idea of costs, but it just gives me a brain fart.
I found a formula for the importation of "luxury vehicles" but couldn't find anything on standard passenger vehicles.
Any idea of a ballpark figure on the costs involved on a deefer worth say $15k, inclusive of freight?
Just really ballpark ie would it be a couple of grand or closer to 10?

Why not go to a customs agent and ask them about estimated cost and issues on importing. That's their profession. Registering in particular states then is a "local" issue.

Just testing the waters at present Scott, thought I'd pose the question on here in case anyone had previous experience.
Landies in WA are priced relative to the real estate and at the moment I'm looking at either flying east to pick one up or importing.

Back in 2001 I brought my Lancia over from the UK. At the time the basic rules & costs were:
1) you had to have owned the vehicle for min 2 yrs, pay gst and any lux car tax on purchase price of vehicle converted to AUS dollars.
2) Get written concent from AUS customs that your vehicle is allowed to be imported (no guarantee of getting it registered though once it is here, although if it is a model that has been sold here that would be a big advantage)
3) the roll on roll off shipping price was then 1,000 pounds (ie not separate container).
4) I would recommend not leaving anything in the car that can "walk" away by itself...
5) Even if you have it steam cleaned from where its come from they will almost always sting you for another steam clean when it arrives here.

unless it is owned and used by you in the country of origin for between 1-2 years it can not be imported in unless it is pre 1989ish or an approved low volume import(supra and skylines etc) the deefer is not on the approved list and thus unless you are bringing it in with you when you come to aus it has to be older that 1989ish.
