I solved my immediate problem which was no heat in the cabin, by disconnecting the 2 vacuum taps and replacing them with a manual operation tap from Repco. One of the vacuum taps must not have been working correctly. Never mind, I will just switch it on in the winter and off in the summer.

I will be interested in any more data you put into the forum.

    Best regards

    Hi Jim,

Sorry for the late reply, been a busy week at work and also had to take the girlfriend to dinner to say sorry for my a/c unit still being in pieces in the bath Best intentions to finish it didn't happen in time.

Glad you got the heater fixed, I just did a similar thing but to STOP my heater working right now, already over 35C here most days and the heater was on all the time

To answer your question, my system didn't have any gas left in it at all (courtesy of a leaking expansion valve) but yes it would also come off if the a/c pipes were still connected. Or at least on mine because there is a space under each pipe to the bottom of the top half of the cover. BUT you will have to disconnect the heater to get the top half off.

Re the vacuum set-up, I have photos of the vacuum pipes in the engine bay if that's any help to you, please let me know. I remember pulling off the fascia unit in the dash before but all the pipes behind that were the same colour, whereas in the engine bay they are multi-coloured.

    Hi Gareth,
The real challenge with the vacuum hoses lies immediately behind the dashboard switching unit. Problem there is that all hoses arrive, but I have no diagram to indicate which hose connects to which port on the back of the switch.

I am ok re where the various tubes go to under the bonnet, its just that all I have is trial and error on attaching at the back of the switch.

I have an operational setup, but its more of an accident than a rational set up.

Thanks for the note and I wish you well with the bathtub.

BTW there must not be many LRs in J. Especially older ones. I thought anything with a few years on it had to be crushed.

    Regards

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

I took the dash switch off today to have a look for you and all I have are 1 blue and 1 white vacuum tube going into the switch, the rest looks as though it's electrical... Didn't get out the carpark today but will take a photo of it tomorrow when I'm outside to show you.

Bathtub now empty and clean (moved everything into the back of the Landy while the GF's here

Actually quite a few Landy's here, thousands of Discos and Rangies. Defenders are mostly 90's which wer imported officially then a few 110's and a friend has a 130 too! I even saw a Series 1 on a Japanese auction site today. It costs quite a bit to keep older cars on the road (so I do it mostly myself) but there's nothing forcing them into the crusher. My other car (more broken than my Defer ) is a 1973 Truimph Stag....seems I have a thing for V8's

    Regards

    Gareth

    Hi Garteth,
I think we may have fifferent switching units although they look very similar. Mine looks like this

It has a plug on the back that the vacuum lines plug to, and it in turn plugs to the back of the switching unit.

The next pic is one sent to me by another County owner and the unit looks different (smaller). Mine is imbedded in a big plate.

    Thanks for your ongoing interest!!

    Regards

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

Took a few photos of the back of my AC control unit today, never worked out how to get the top of the dash off so can't really see the connections beneath that.

    Hope these help!

The top of the dash is removed by taking out the screws along the top...there are three main screws, plus the demister slot screws. Thats the easy part.

The hard part is at least two screws which are driven upwards undeaneath the dash top. These can only be seen by forcing the grey dash piece back. It takes enormous effort to get these out (mine did anyway). There is a big chance that you will scratch the grey insert but that is how I got mine released. I have only put one screw back in because access is so difficult.

This is the worst case of jerry built fitting I have found on the LR so far. They should be ashamed.

Thanks for the suggestion, but these manuals are dated 1984, and they do not have later year supplements, so the 1985 County is not included and it's A/C and heater are quite different.

If you are aware of later manuals please let us know!

Jim, you might want to OPEN your eyes and mind, next time. What you asked for is there, you just have to LOOK!!!!!

    http://www.landroverweb.com/Pdf-file...p-manual-5.pdf

Not just 1984, the manual is from 1984 to 1993 with supplements for later years.

    Danny,
Thanks for the redirection. Section 82 in Manual 5 does have relevant information.

    Tokyo V8,
Did you get the message I sent to your AULRO message system?

    Regards

    Jim
