I might be being a bit over protective of the gear box but I have been warned by several people not to tow in 5th .
The van is 2.8 ton dry, and at the end of summer we intend to take off on a trip round Aus. So would prefer not to have any gear box troubles in the middle of nowhere.
In our favour is, we are not in a hurry, just going to wander along stopping and looking at anything that interests us, free camping when we can (cant afford the fuel to travel to far each day anyway ).
I bought the Roverdrive without realising what temperatures’ the lt230 was inclined to run at,
But now I have it I will keep it as cool as I can, keep good oil up to it and give it a go.
Also love the idea of having a sixth gear when not towing.

I am going to cruise along in 4th , 4th overdrive instead of 5th overdrive why should you Puma drivers have all the fun????.:D:D

Have you actually towed the van anywhere?.Towing a 2.8T dry van means you'll be 3.3-3.5 minimum loaded and thats a hell of a wieght to lug around.I'll have to go back through the threads and find what motor your running but if it's a Tdi or Td5 you'll never get higher than 4th let alone 5th or overdrive. Pat
180F is still 82C, so not too bad. (Personally, I find that any Fahrenheit gauge makes me nervous with its big numbers.)
Anyway, if (whoever it is - I've lost track!!!) already has a Roverdrive, use it with a gauge and see how you go, and if you need to you can easily sell it. The finned sump plate won't make a blind bit of difference, (the fins aren't fine enough, but it's better than nothing), and you can run synthetic oil once the overdrive is run in, and that's about all you can do.

Ok, thought I'd have my 2cents worth and bring it back to the start... Roverdrives... What r they like, where are the stockists, and most importantly.... how much do they cost??? Runnin a Td5 130 myself with 285's means a Disco transferbox (1.222 to 1) is to high a ratio so the Roverdrive is the good option (and a ECU upgrade from TOMBIE!!). Also plan to make my own transfer box sump pan that'll over double the capacity.. Contemplating remote sump with hoses linking it.... Thoughts please!!

Sitec if you search a thread called uploading pictures you can find full instructions. thats how I found out and have to go back there for a refresher every time I want to do it.
I am fitting my Roverdrive tomorow , I have already fitted the Larger sump and temp gauge and will be posting some before and after transfer case oil temps next week.

a remote sump with hoses is just like a cooler, so you would be better of running a radiator type cooler than just a sump.......BUT you will need to PUMP the oil to either. The LT230 does NOT have a pump. The R380 does.......to do a bolt on sump that doubles the capacity would be to have it hang down below the chassis rails and be torn off....
I know it is a personal thing, but I cant understand why people by LR etc to tow 3+ tonnes. You would be much better off with a small Isuzu truck etc.
It would be nice to use a 12-volt oil pump but I can't find anything that has more than a 30-minute duty cycle. Using the existing drain and fill plugs as the inlet and outlet would be handy but the pump is the bit without the easy answer. But what a lot of trouble to protect a very expensive bolt-on.
And I'm sure I'm getting boring here, but I'll say it again: if they'd just designed and tested the Roverdrive properly in the first place then you wouldn't have to worry about it. I know I'm cranky about it, but the aftersales support was abysmal, leaving me up here in the north with no option but to give up on the thing.
