roverdrive overdrive

Ive got a Rover Canada Transfer case extended sump.
This incoroprates a cooler via fins & doubles the TC oil capacity.

This is an elegant solution (ignore the green arrow that was for another thread) I believe Ashcroft has the same product.

The sump only adds about 500-700mls, not double....but better than nothing. I think you may have this confused with the R380 oil cooler kit that Ashcroft does

Did I say 130Deg F ? :wasntme: I meant 180 Deg F. I went by a photo of the dash- too lazy to go down to the garage.:angel:

I run Redline oil & the transfer case has a Marks finned oil cooler- not many of those around:cool:.

With hard 4wd stuff, it rarely gets to 140deg f

What I am hoping to find out is if it is possible to remove the cooling pipe that is there at the moment and replace it with a second hand oil cooler from another vehicle. Got a feeling though that I read some where that the R380 oil pump won't be able to circulate the oil ??:confused:

Earlier models used a cooler mounted under the radiator (looks like a long dunny brush) and the UK MOD Wolfs use a fairly substantial cooler mounted right in front of the radiator.

Thanks for the info guys I have the finned sump, just waiting for the temp gauge to arrive before fitting . If I'm in any doubt about the temp then I will try removing the u shaped tube and replacing it with a proper oil cooler, or maybe just cutting off the U and extending out to an oil cooler with some rubber pipes.

hang on are you talking about both the R380 AND lt230? as I know it, There is no way of running an oil cooler for the LT230. By this I mean no simple way, of coarse anything is possible with money and you could use some sort of external pump......The R380 on the other hand has an in built pump and oil coolers are common on them. Other than fitting the finned sump and using full Synthectic oil, I dont think much else one can do???

But also must be taken into consideration is the number of LT230 units being used world wide, and how many faliures due to excessive heat??? Whilst they definitly are getting hot, they must be fairly well designed to be able to cope.....

Hi there Uninformed. I am talking about removing the U shape pipe / oil cooler from the R380 gear box, and replacing it with a proper oil cooler.
I am looking at doing this in the hope that reducing the temperature of the gear box will in turn help reduce the temperature of the transfer case.

The reason for wanting to do this is that I am fitting a Roverdrive overdrive unit that fits on to the Lt 230 and shares its oil.

Roverdrive recommend that the tranfer case oil temp be monitored and restricted to 100 C and as others in this thread are reporting temperatures in excess of this under fairly easy use, and I intend to tow a fairly heavy van I am looking to keep it as cool as possible.

My original reason for buying the Roverdrive unit was to allow me to tow in 4th overdrive as many recommend not towing in 5th with the R380.

Whoa, stop for a second Dave.

The R380 g/box and LT230 t/case have totally separate compartments, they do not share fluids at all, there are actually two oil seals between them.

The gearbox is pressure lubed by an internal pump, the t/case is splash lubed.

I did realize that the gear box and transfer case do not share oil but was thinking that there would be heat soak between the two of them, there for keeping the gear box cooler would help keep the transfer box cool. Or do you think that I would not gain enough to be worth the trouble? All new to me so I'm just picking brains here.;)

Dave, I see where you are coming from....but I dont think it will help enough to keep the T/Case under 100c in summer towing :(

As far as fifth....200,000km towing a 1.8t dual axle so far and still ok....touch wood. I have only just started to run Synthetic in both and have added the finned sump. Next is to add the oil cooler to the R380. I would not how ever run another gearbox (overdrive) to bring the gear box back into 4th.....just my opinion.
