So there will be a Defender and a Defender Classic in production at the same time, like what happened with the Range Rover in 1993/4. Features like air suspension might be shared with the classic.

LR shoulda followed Jeep's lead with the Wrangler when it went from TJ to JK - the change seemed evolutionary but the sales actually increased!
As it stands, I can see a situation where the current deefa will compete with the new one - and I somehow think that the car that has been around for generations will outlast the bubble car concept...
IMHO a modern Land Rover/Jaguar/Tarta desinged and manufactured straight 4 cyl diesel of similar displacement (or greater as an option) is a better choice than the 2.7/3litre TDV6.
The benefits as I see it include:
- fewer parts required greatly reduces cost
- fewer moving parts reduces friction leading to better fuel economy
- straight engine is stiffer than V for lower weight
- crank is better supported in straight engine
- turbo and alternator can be mounted higher, giving better protection from water and mud
- don't have to buy engines from Ford
Disadvantages include:
- cost of development will take time to amortise
- not as smooth running (but then we are talking about a Defender)
