    We were looking at/for a new 130 today and when we spoke with the two different dealerships we went to, they both said basically the same thing,, that there are only 25,000 "defender units" (all models) made per year at the factory, and to get a 130, you had to specifically order one, as they say there are only a handful that make it to this country,, Along with that, half the colours available in the brochure are now no longer available due to the earthquake/tsunami earlier this year,,
    Apparently, we only buy about 3% of the total units made, and I'm unsure if it includes what the forces buy. I dont know if this info is accurate, but it seemed strange that two different dealers would say the same thing on the same day. But if we wanted one, and we orderd it today, it would most likely be March 2012 before arrival.

    Hope this helps,,

    And there lay the ongoing reason Defender will always be in decline. Land Rover don't want to loose Defender, but they can't see it sinking from there own stupid business model. Perhaps nothing has really changed in 60 years from the first Land Rover in this country, but they are still hanging on so all is well.

    Even if Utu Hire decides the specs are what he wants, the whole process of looking, buying, servicing is usually to hard unless your set on a Defender.

    Good luck with the home work Utu. Please let us know what you decide to go with.

    Newhue, unfortunately you seem to be correct. Even if my heart is set on a Defender it is difficult to justify based on a 3-6 month lead-in.

    The even more frustrating thing is that I've tried to keep emotion out of the decision making. What I've done is compare dual cab 4wd utes against the Toyota Hilux, everything from heights, widths, weights through to payloads, towing capabilities, maintenance schedules, etc, etc. And it doesn't matter how I work out the numbers, the Defender comes out on top with the new Ranger second.

    The problem with the Defender is the lead-in times. If I was only chasing one a year then it may not be an issue but if a company wants to long-term hire a 4wd ute and I don't have one sitting around I can't tell them to hold on for 6 months. But if I went for a Ranger I know there will be one sitting around in a NSW dealership ready to go tomorrow. (I realise the Ranger will be in short supply over the coming 3 months but after that it shouldn't be an issue...)

    Decisions, decisions...

    For private use, I 100% agree. For a business, unfortunately time isn't a luxury I can afford.

    Barbagallo's have one on display. I thought they were all sold by pre-order?

    Utu Hire,

    I am probably not much help;

    My Hilux blew a head gasket (& something probably more serious) on a Saturday. By the next Friday I drove out of the dealership in a new 110 in my favourite colour.

    Fate or luck. I now believe that my 110 is the best 4wd ever made!

    Beckford.

    The white one out the front has a SOLD sign on the dash. My 110 was on display in the show room when i picked it up 2 weeks ago.

    There's been a new silver 130 dual cab chassis sitting in a LR dealership at Port Macquarie for a few months - was still there a couple of weeks ago.
    Shouldnt be too hard to find the name of a LR dealer in PM - could only be one.
