    Defender clutch master cylinder problems

I have been going through a clutch master cylinder about every year, on my 02 defender. The last one went while I was away, forcing a very embarrassing tow home. There is nothing sadder than a defender on a tilt tray. Discos maybe, but not a defender . The clutch is brand new. I put it in about six months ago (that's a weekend I'd rather forget!!!). Should I change the slave cylinder also? The slave is at least three or four years old. I have both- spares from a recent trip to the Simpson. Any ideas? Are there better quality master cylinders?

Yes, they do like to go out in sympathy

Oh, you put it on a tilt tray, just for no clutch? just start in low, work through the gears, matching revs, range change, then do it again

You can start the car in gear off the starter motor when the clutch master goes. On hills, you have to revert to low range. Sometimes on hills the gears lock up so you need to revert through all different gears to free them up. Just hope that whoever is behind you is loaded with patience!

Whats wrong with the Master / slave on the Defender. Wrong spec fluid or what ?? I got 540,000 klm on my 80 series Toyota still on original clutch hydraulics- using Dot3 fluid. My Defender had new Hydraulics installed just prior to my purchase. If they fail again Im going to run Dot 3 fluid & if that fails Im going to fit Toyota Master & Slave.
Re driving without clutch - its easy just match the speeds & unload the driveline before changing - its easy , Try it in the company car, Never heard of gears locking up

The Landrover manual recommends that both slave and master are changed at the same time. Included in the box of a slave cylinder I recently fitted was a note stating the same.

I mean when you can't get the car out of gear because it has load on it (sitting on incline). I had to jump up and down in my seat to rock the car to get it out of 2nd once when the clutch went. Desperate times!

I've changed more master and slave cylinders than any other part on my Defender.

On the weekend I changed both again with sleeved versions from BHSS at Capalaba. Sleeving will cost around $80 each.

Crap seals in the M/C, nothing to do with the fluid.

I changed to a PBR one years ago and no more problems.
Funny thing is I'm still on the original slave cyl and it's 12 years/280,000km old now.
