My unfortunate run continues.
I've noticed a problem with the mounts used to support my custom tray rails. The supports are standard on the vehicle and usually support the tub. Perhaps it's the weight of the canopy, as I've next very little offroad, and that was fairly moderate stuff.
I'm considering my options, but perhaps my expected return to Melbourne from Eden through the high country might be in jeopardy
The tray rails also run directly over the top of the shock mount, so in a pinch hopefully the shock mount could take the weight.
I'm considering my options. I'm thinking I could replace the bolt on mounts that have bent/cracked with some heavy duty box steel, or if necessary even some solid steel. iThey should be a fairly easy fix. The cracked/bent horizontal brackets attached to the welded on upright bracket are more of a worry. This upright should take the weight, but these horizontal sections that the bracket bolts to probably control lateral movement. Not sure how much this matters.
Alien D2 mentioned in the truck game they sometimes use hardwood packers to take the weight, and this is what I'll do short-term if I can't sort another solution. He also suggested that I should move the tray forward an inch, so the latitudinal "girder" bolt is directly above the upright bracket that's welded onto the chassis. I agree that this would be a good idea.
Anyway, has anyone had this happen, and know somewhere/someone bewteen the Mornington Peninsula and Eden to take it to for advice/manufacturing etc?

Anyway, that is a fairly common sight with big loads on these trays, they are a bit poorly engineered IMO. I have repaired a few in the past by replacing one of the horizontals with decent material, drilling and bolting the tray brackets to that. This is a part time fix as really they need to be completely reengineered as far as mountings go.

Actually, it was pretty well maintained by a forum memeber, but I think it's just a run of bad luck. I think the current issue is due carrying more weight than expected, but also perhaps a common issue like you mentioned.

grab a set of gearbox mounts and some 5mmx50 bar stock
cut the barstock to the width of the existing top plate drill 3 holes in the plate
drop a trans mount onto it on the center hole bolt it up, bolt the mount to the tray put the tray back on and then do up the 2 bolts that hold the existing mount to the chassis
done.
