I have a similar thing with my partner who feels that it's silly to wave... he should be ashamed of himself as he is a Disco driver.. his punishment is to be banned from driving my Deefer (suits me lol)..Quote:

In the mid 1990's a friend had a land rover series 3 and I asked why did everyone else with a Landy wave at him? He half jokingly said it is because you never know when you will break down and need help or spare parts so pays to be nice to each other. When I got my '78 Series 3 last year I anticipated greatly the wave. I was not disappointed as all Defender and Series owners would wave or wave back. Discos and Rangies forget about it. With my 2nd Land Rover being a Puma and a daily drive I don't get any less waves. My wife thinks it's hysterical... I know deep down though she is regretting buying that new Pajero Exceed last year.
The LR wave, which was around before defender and applies to all LR up to the point of Freelander and D3 RRS is going well.

Just finished a four day drive from Townsville to Adelaide via Mackay, Emerald, Bourke and Broken Hill and scored a 100% hit rate getting return waves, although sadly that was only from five Defenders over the whole trip!And three of those were in the Mackay region All the others must be off the black top somewhere instead.
There seems to be heaps of defenders here in Mackay. I go to Rocky and Townsville often and am always disappointed because there never seems to be as many around. OR maybe Mackay is just full of posers in their Defenders and everywhere else they are off getting dirty as you suggest.Quote:

So . . . .with a return journey from Quinns Rocks to Mirrabooka planned, it was an ideal time for the kids to play "Spot the Deefer" en route.
With the rules clearly explained to the kids that if you see a Landy, shout out and throw a wave in as "thats the rules of the road when you're a Landy owner". We take our parental responsibility seriously and fully understand that our kids need to play their part in the social connectedness of being a Landy owner.
Well much to all of our surprise there were loads of Landies out and about. A selection of Deefers, Disco's and Rangies. Lots of shout outs from around our 110 . . . . There's one, here's another and so on . . . . . . .
As we headed south a White 110 heading north on Wanneroo Road near the light horse trail gave us our first acknowledgment and a firm wave back to our flash of lights and thumbs up . . .. . Great. Our two kids were made up and a friend of one our kids was amazed . . . . "You actually wave at other people you don't even know?". . . . . . Err yes ! Welcome to the world of Landrover.
Then it all took a turn for the worse and even our visitor was becoming less convinced that our story of waving to other Landies was nothing more than a load of cock and bull.
2 more Deefers (purple ish 110 crossing Ocean Reef road heading east and a silver 90 heading south just like us) 3 or 4 Disco's and a Rangie . . . .disappointing did not respond to a wave not just from driver and passenger but 3 excited kids in the rear wishing for that gesture of comradery to prove that the Landy wave existed.
The most disappointing was a silver 90 heading south on Wanneroo road . . .picture the scene . . . Spotted in the distance . . . .90 on the inside lane . . .pedal to the metal . . . Kids getting more excited as we reel the 90 in our sights. A change of lane and we move to the outside lane and slowly coast past the 90 . . . . A couple of beeps on the horn and 3 kids in the back waving like mad . . . . .
"They're not waving back dad" . . . . Surely not . . . .I beeped the horn twice . . .the kids were waving like they were being kidnapped and seeking help . . . . . But no . . . It wasn't to be . . .the opportunity to convince our visitor had passed. The look of defeat amongst the passengers was clearly evident, slowly finding other things to look for and talk about had overtaken the "Landy rules of the road game" . . . .Deefer spotting was over . . . For today !
But tomorrow we start again and as Deefer owners who are used to the same tradition being used in the UK, we will endeavour to carry on the "wave".
Come on folks . . . . . .give us a wave . . . . If not for me . . . . . Do it for the kids
