"Bluebell" my wife and I have just returned back from Singleton...and I can report that the defender wave is well and truly alive in that part of town....we even had an enthusiastic defender owner "do the wave" with arm outstretched through the open drivers window.
The wife and I are currently on tour from Perth across oz and just back from Fraser Island . We have met and waved to many Defender owners most of whom wave back . Maleny is definitely Defender wave territory but don't expect many waves returned on Fraser Island as most of the Defers are hire cars. We sat beside a yellow 90 on the freeway to brisbane side by side for 15 mins and didn't even get a glance. Heading off South to Sydney in a couple of days so keep an eye out for a white 90 with ba roof top tent and WA plates. See pic of our back up vehicle.:)

Passed a nice looking black 130 twice the other day,no wave!I've seen it in town a few times, think a copper owns it.
Heading South along the coast through Northern NSW saw heaps of Defenders and got a wave from almost al of them. Now in Sydney and have seen quite A few here as well including one very highly lifted today. Off to Adelaide on our way hone tomorrow .
Mike:)
All the Defender owners round here are friendly enough to wave. Same as a few others on here I feel guilty if I'm daydreaming about my next trip and miss one. Have finally developed three golden rules based on my grand total of 9 months with my Defender:
1) NEVER wave at a troopy - look for the headlight positioning and fresh air vents
2) Disco's get a wave if they wave at me first (can't make them think that owning a Landy is good enough to get a Defender wave without cause  )
3) Other 90s get a full outside arm wave if I have my window down :D
Keep wavin peoples,
Sean
PT 2) Question
HAve you ever had a Disco, RAngie, Evoque wave at you.
I waved to some discos in my area but got nothing back- so disco's are off my list.
I've found some discos wave back but very few. You can increase your "wave back rate" with them but singling out ones with mods, I guess those are more likely to be enthusiasts.
In nearly a year of owning the D90 I've only had one Disco driver initiate a wave, but it was a very good one, in the Snowy from memory.
