It's a hard core Defender (and series) wave, not a pampered Land Rover Discovery or, god forbid, snotty Range Rover wave. Still haven't decided whether it should include the 'Puma' brigade with their soft interiors and working air conditioning.

I call on all brothers (women, of course, aren't permitted to drive Defenders, except in dire emergencies) to man up and ignore all waves from those in touch with their female side in their comfy emasculated Discoveries and Range Rovers who stay dry in even torrential rain in their dust proof cabins. They know not the true pain behind 'the wave'.

Defenders snobs -- unite. Save the wave for those who deserve.

We always wave at Series and D'fers.

Disco's and RRS not so much, but always keep a keen eye out for the others.

The wave is an important part of that special something that Defender's have - you have got own one to know

I think the reason for lack of Puma waves is becuase they are too busy waving at Transit Vans

And yes the wave is to say oo look and other person who is hot, half deaf and cramped but still has a big smile on his face... better give him a wave because no else understands.

I wave to all and Sundry, the problem here is that a lot of Defenders are driven by Farmers, they tend not to be too enthusiastic about it all.

I think women look really attractive driving a Defender. Some of them even wave.

I can't wait till you breakdown in the middle of nowhere and a fully sealed, soft snotty Disco or Rangy rolls up, realises who it is and converts from a 5 digit wave to a one digit signal! Then you will truly know the "pain" behind the wave!!

It is a changing landscape in the World of Land Rovers

(Possibly some would have preferred a rather than the to close the above sentence),

Nevertheless whether we want to admit or indeed even recognise the fact, ownership of Land Rovers has gone through significant changes especially since the arrival of the Puma.

Many owners of the Puma do not relate to the heritage of the Defender and event further, the heritage of the Series. Their vehicle is not a Defender in their minds (or speak) for it is a Puma.

Sometimes when a wave is not returned I imagine the thoughts of the offending driver (Puma driver - and there you are - even in this text I have differentiated between Defender and Puma) saying: Oh dear that is one of those old Defender things, how glad I am that I drive a Puma.

Of course this does not refer to anyone on this site for the owners of the latest Defender on this site have all become Defender Tragics and as members of AULRO declare their allegiance to all things Defender whether TDI, TD5, Puma 2.4 or Puma 2.2.

Further to my thoughts, I believe a change to the ownership-style of older Defenders, County's and Series vehicles has occurred. Younger people, recognising the capabilities of the vehicle but also the "cool factor" are purchasing these vehicles. In addition, pricing is an influencing factor - for example a damned good Disco 1 is a lot cheaper than the same year model of just about any Toyota (I know I used the example of Disco but just illustrating the changing world).

These people do not have any affiliation or the passion that we have. Hopefully they will but until then we are responsible to keep the wave alive.

Dare I say if my theory is correct, the "changing landscape" is a result of firstly, the Puma taking Land Rover into or somewhere near modern times. Jeez, air-conditioning that works, a non-trucklike gearbox and a radio which is not super-glued to maximum volume just so the occupants can hear a song or two

The older vehicles? Testament to the longevity of the Defender/Series/County - I just hope it never becomes ultra-cool to be in a Land Rover Series or Defender.

Imagine yuppies, cashed-up footballers and the like all cruisin around town in a Series (metallic paint job, 24 inch wheels etc).

Keep the wave alive? To own a Defender - past or present version - the prospective owner should need to apply and pass a blood test as to whether they qualify to own such a vehicle

And of course, undergo a 5 day Induction Course - The Land Rover Wave

I get annoyed when I am not driving my Defender or Series and see a waving opportunity. How I wish for a cloaking device, to magically transform the wife's Subaru, or my work truck into Landy so I can wave.

It makes me feel bad. To date I have initiated 2,376,311 waves with a return rate of 82%. In the event I haven't initiated the wave, my return rate is 97.63%.

I have noticed the return rate of initiated waves deminishing in the last couple of years. I will have to do the study on whether this is an across the board trend or specifically related to me.
