Thread: advice on lcd screens and dash console

i would consider a permanent 'carputer' using something like a tiny rasberry pi and run software like centrafuse which essentially gives you touch interface for gps, usb cameras, mp3, video, odb, etc etc etc.... you can customise the set up till your hearts content.

All your attached devices could run of a powered USB hub. Cameras, adruino , 3g modem, screen etc.

I currently have a flip up mimo on the dash and a small netbook laptop that I attach to a USB and power port in my cubby box.. this then boots into centrafuse and attaches to all the usb devices in the car - switching screen and control to dash.

Best bit is on travels I can take the laptop out and use it away from the car on windows 7 (dual boot). Wost bit is the hassle attaching it in a busy cubby box, turning it off and on, waiting for it to boot... so I'll probably switch to a permanently installed rasberry pi style computer in future.

Afaik arduino would not be enough of a computer for all you want to do.

But could surely interface with any broader system you instal.

Also on terms of metrics and odb afaik rover users proprietary protocol that you would have to hack first...

I wasn't meaning the arduino do all the functions. I was thinking maybe it does engine management stuff and connects as secondary input to a touchscreen GPS that also plays mp3.

Being a 300tdi with no computer management does the following still apply?

If I was going to use an adruino to read in all my sensor inputs I'd be looking into making the adruino output OBD data over a USB or bluetooth link up... I could then plug the adruino into my 'carputer' to display the output or with bluetooth use mobile app like torque.

No, so long add you can connect into the sensors loom at some point for the signal which i'm going to do, as that will even work on a odb like a d2.
