The head can move far enough for valves to damage the bore.

Yeah, gone cold on using seal up, even temporaraly.Wait for my tax cheque and get it done properly.Estimates so far $1800 to$3500 if head not damaged, from three land rover repairers.

Head movement due to expansion/contraction of the alloy head that partially shears off the two plastic locating dowels - normally leads to pressurisation of the cooling system. Fix Requires (as a minimum) a new head gasket, new head bolts and new steel locating dowels.

The steel dowels from later models can't be used on the earliest heads so I made my own for my '99 using the shank of an 8mm drill bit. My Oct 2002 MY03 D2a still had plastic (there's a VIN cut-off) but could have used the steel dowels from the later MY03s.
