OK I take it all back.
It looks like the freight forwarders have misinterpreted IATA regulations anyway, but that doesn't help if the shocks are knocked back.
This extract from IATA special provisions details that car shock absorbers if they meet the criteria are exempt form Dangerous Goods classification.

BTW My understanding is that oil filled shock such as Koni were never considered dangerous only gas charged such as Bilstein

A114 (283) Articles, containing gas intended to function as shock absorbers, including impact energy absorbing devices or pneumatic springs are not subject to these Regulations provided:



(a) each article has a gas space capacity not exceeding 1.6 L and a charge pressure not exceeding 280 bar where the product of the capacity (litres) and charge pressure (bars) does not exceed 80 (i.e. 0.5 L gas space and 160 bar charge pressure, 1 L gas space and 80 bar charge pressure, 1.6 L gas space and 50 bar charge pressure, 0.28 L gas space and 280 bar charge pressure);



(b) each article has a minimum burst pressure of 4 times the charge pressure at 20ºC for products not exceeding 0.5 L gas space capacity and 5 times charge pressure for products greater than 0.5 L gas space capacity;



(c) each article is manufactured from material which will not fragment upon rupture;



(d) each article is manufactured in accordance with a quality assurance standard acceptable to the appropriate national authority; and



(e) the design type has been subjected to a fire test demonstrating that pressure in the article is relieved, by means of a fire degradable seal or other pressure relief device such that the article will not fragment and the article does not rocket.

Philip Im not having a dig at you and I know you are only trying to help. You originaly said they can not be shipped, then you added a link from one company and it clearly says you can send them as long as they are declared and the cost will be more............

You mention that someone had theirs knocked back. That does suck for them, but its the first I have heard of it. It would seem to me that the big dogs like UPS, Fedex etc have their own aircraft and their own rules (under the FAA etc guidelines) Im sure some freight companies just say no for ease of it all, but like I said, many have had shocks shipped and fully declared and NO problems.

btw Koni have not been oil only for a little while now.

FWIW race type mono-tube dampers eg. Fox, King, etc are shipped internationally sans nitrogen anyway.

I was just looking at their listings, they recommend DeCarbon for NOT OFFROAD USE .



I have been running them exclusively for 10 years on my own vehicles, and have fitted countless sets, all with excellent results, no fading while towing, high speed corrugations ETC ETC.

I wouldn't hesitate to use these shocks...

I worked for ARB a few years back and we originally had an issue air freighting shocks out to clients. A ruling was made that as they are charged with inert Nitrogen then thay could be shipped via air as declared without issues. Ive sent many many out via air to Aus and overseas not one issue.

Hi All,
Rimmer Bros have advised me that these Bilsteins are not suitable for 2" lift. They have steered me to Terra Firma Big Bores 2+ at 50 a corner.

Anyone had these...........with King springs?

they will be too long. even the standard length terrafirma shocks are longer than standard lr.

i have fitted plenty of bilstein and kings +2" and not had a problem. the only issues i have had is with unladen 130 dual cab defenders with the factory helper springs topping out the shocks.

bilstein are a far better shock for the $ than TF.
