Thread: welding on puma

Hi Red Roo.
In a word, No.. From past experiences welding on Tractors and Forklifts with Ecu's, unplug the ECU as well as disconnecting the battery. I was told years ago that if you are using a Mig, just the battery would do... but was never game enough to try it!
Being a Puma it'd be nearly new.. There's only 4 bolts holding that bumper on.. That would eliminate any doubt. What are you welding on the front. Transport boys don't tend to like bits sticking out unless they are factory or recognised aftermarket parts..

hi simon trouble is i need to tack couple of brackets with bumper in place. there should be nothing hanging out just bit of square section flush under bumper for removeable tow hitch

ps where do you unplug ecu

Not sure on a Puma... It's under the drivers seat on my Td5... When you do find it take your time with the plug, and understand how it locks and unlocks. The plugs contain anywhere from 20 to 200 pin connectors. There could also be two plugs, aka Td5. Someone who has a Puma will post soon no doubt. Cheers.

It's on the fire wall, top back of engine.

I've had welding regarding Steel and Aluminium done, I have just disconnected the battery and it has been fine.

The dealer told me the correct way to wind down the system is glow the car like you want to start, then turn key off and remove the battery terminal before 18 seconds pass.
Not sure what happens after 18 seconds. Perhaps something to do with the immobiliser before it shuts everything down. Just have the battery terminal loose beforehand and its a piece of cake.

I do not weld things that offen on modern vehicles.
But the local exhaust place Mig welds exhaust pipes on all types of vehicles frequently all the time.
I take there knowleage seriously.
They do not disconnect batteries, as it can be a real pain in alot of vehicles to reset things again and not all vehicles are the same.
The big important thing which must be done is the welders earth must be clean and right on the same piece of metal you are welding.
only if the earth is not on the object you are welding and you get stray currents though the vehicle, or welding too close to a electronic module will you get problems.
Ask the local exhaust place..............they weld vehicles all the time.
