Need some 100% confirmation, Duratorq 2.4 LR vs transit

Right, need to find a reco short or long engine for a 2.4 defender, can find quite a few transit suppliers/ recon engines on the shelf. IS THE DEFENDER ENGINE THE SAME BLOCK/ HEAD???? I know the ancilliaries are almost all different, but that isn't what I need to know obviously prior to ordering an engine. any Help ?

JC, I was told LR did a fair bit of work converting the Transit donk to cope with angles a 4x4 can get itself into. Something about the oil pick up. However I am not sure it it's bollocks, and can't recall who told me.

Mmmm, this is the problem I was concerned about, too many 'differences' maybe the problem. The oil pickup may only be different so no biggy but who knows??? I can't go ordering an engine without being 100% sure. I am still leaning toward getting it done locally but can't even get a quote out of anyone so

Give Sam from Rangelands a call. He has a Transit as his service work vehicle.

Ummm! If things are that bad why not go the whole hog and dump in the BIG transit 2.8 or 3.0 or ....... engine. You would have to organise the sump and oil pick up etc, but as I understand it LR didn't originally cos the diff would hit the sump on the pre MY09 unless modified.

Further thinks LR take them straight off the Ford line, and add LR badged covers. Everything else has FOMOCO all over it. That is why 07 and 09 MYs have so much trouble with everything chafing. LR at Solihul really did squat, except for the ECU programming.

    Cheers

Not much help but the 2.4 Transit had the centrifuge filter, same part as Td5 filter. (under the cap on the rocker cover)

LR in its wisdom removed that !!

I recall reading that there are a number of significant modifications done to the Land Rover version of the engine.

Flywheels are completely different and therefore any mechanical part associated with that. Oil management, coolant management etc is apparently all different.

That being the main reason the guys are shoe horning 2.7 and 3.0 TdV6 Discovery "Lion" engines into custom modification Defenders and not just the bigger Ford Ranger and Transit Duratorq engines. The Discovery engines are obviously also modified to Land Rover's requirements.

Interesting read on the Wiki page

Thanks Rick, but the costs are way up there as it is, the vehicle is out of warranty, has cost him enough he just wants it running again. looked into a used engine , but then he decided to discuss it with LR, dead end street due to obvious reasons, so now back to a reco short. And at least 1 or 2 injectors.
