    Hi Gitney,
You are right on so many levels, since I wrote this post I am now back in a Land Rover. Yes I still have the Land Cruiser 100 series I bought, I have done a major service on it and replaced the timing belt, all so easy to do, not like the open heart surgery I had to perform on the TDV6 engine.
At the time I parted with the Deefer I was using a Holden Crewman to go to work yes it was comfortable and ***** it was quick. However after all it is a Holden Commodore, yes an Australian icon and for the service it gave to me it was great, never missed a beat.
I missed Land Rover so I sold the Crewman (eventually) and bought a P38a, I had pleasant memories of the P38, comfortable, quiet and reliable, my memories and maybe not the same for others. The P38 is now getting quite hard to maintain, parts are harder and yes they all seem to have air suspension problems, saying that I fitted a new valve block and overhauled the compressor and it was fine.
Six months down the track I have now sold the P38 and gone to a D3 4.0 petrol, all the creature comforts of a D3, air suspension and the get up and go of the 4.0 V6.
Steel pan conversion yesterday, transmission is now back to normal. Couple of trim bits replaced and things are now quite neat inside.
I think I'm going to stick with the D3 for a while now, I don't think I'll ever make it into a Prado, I'm glad it has worked out for you. The other bit you mention about the wave, and the camaraderie of the Land Rover marque, I doubt you will ever put a value on that. The car park scenario, like you I would have picked the Deefer.

I have done a few thousand km this year in rental 79 series and 100 series. I have posted before that I have been impressed by the motor - apart from the fuel consumption. If the dc ute had rear coils, a wider track, 6th gear, and a proper rear door without a fake wheel arch, I would have bought one.

Take a stock cruiser to somewhere with decent 4wd tracks such as cruiser park( or similar) than take a stock defender up the same track and you will see in real life the difference, defenders were built for one reason, off-road driving which is why they run coils on all four corners unlike the rough riding leafs of the new toyotas. ( 80 series was toyotas best 4wd, coils on all four corners)

So far my Defender has been faultless, still on the boat, gets to Oz in 4 days

The Company hilux is parked next to the washing machine, which is also white, but has more soul.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
    apologies to Socrates

    Clancy MY15 110 Defender

Clancy's gone to Queensland Rovering, and we don't know where he are

100 series and 200 series , Prado and FJ Cruiser all have coils on 4 corners.
tho the 80 Series FTE was by far the best cruiser made

Having owned 40 80 and 100 series cruisers, plus numerous Landrovers including a Hybrid double difflocked v8 90 and a Td5 110 Defender I can report that the Td5 Defender was the best off road by far, just a pity they are so dammed unreliable.

....... And I would not be bagging leaf springs either, my new truck has 4 x parabolic leaves , has better articulation than the 110 and exponentially superior to any of the aforementioned vehicles in any off road situation (unless there are low hanging branches)

Should have been more specific in regard to " coils on all four corner", 80/100 series run a solid front end, however pretty sure prado and new 200series and fj cruiser are ifs front, which in my opinion are nowhere near as strong when put into extreme conditions compared to a solid front end setup.

The new Prados are definitely IFS up front.

See: Toyota Prado specifications Kakadu Turbo Diesel

As for the rear - does "adaptive rear pneumatic cylinders with three selectable suspension heights, three ride comfort levels" mean airbags and not coils, like a Discovery 4 has?

To be honest a mate had a prado with pretty much everything done to it, I know it's an ifs setup up front due to how many times its broken (cv's mainly...)whilst we have been away, he just bought a new 110 defender, and couldn't be happier!!

the poverty pack 100 series (actually designated 105) still had a live axle front end, it was basically an 80 series with a 100 body on it. That was the last live axle front (apart from the current 76 series wagon and troopies , which are live axles but as mentioned only coils on front)

Unlike the Disco4 The 200 series still has live axle rear suspension

but the 200 series fans argue that it has better off road capability than a Double difflocked live axle Landcruiser , the same as the LR4 owners will brag superior 4WD ability over a Defender

fairly compelling argument here, 200 series driver does not appear to know what he is doing but vehicle appears to perform better than double diff locked live axle 76 series, ........ anyway they are just whitegoods !

Either way, whatever brand I'd hate to be such a dumbass that I needed a vehicle that did all the work for me, I'd rather be in control than some damn computer !
