    TD5 motor Defender / Disco 2

    Hi Forumites,
Can I assume that fundamentally the engine in a TD5 defender and a disco 2 are the same?
If I take the fuel injectors out of the original engine and swap them over to the donor engine, is that it or is there other stuff like the crankshaft sensor or other electronic wizardry that needs to be changed over to prevent having to reflash the ecu? Could the donor engine ECU be swapped over into the Defer, are they the same?

Anything else anybody can think of, appreciated, are the flywheels the same?

the engines essentially the same, keep an eye on the years tho.

ideally you update the ECU with injector codes when you change the injectors over.

the ECU's interchange but require reconfiguring to suit auto/manual and other modules that are either present or not depending on the discos build level or the deefers lack of disco options.

    Hi Dave,
All good points, thank you as always, forgot about the auto / manual configuration, mines a 2001 Deefer and the engine is coming out of a 2002/ 03 build Disco 2.
It is just a project engine I'm going to play with as a bit of a project in the shed, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting into something to complicated that would end up being unusable in the Deefer.
I've managed to get the engine out of a write off D2, and no there was no impact on the crankshaft in either direction. So I've been told.

The 2001 Defender engine will probably be a 10P (EU2 Spec) and the 2002/03Disco engine will be a 16P (EU3 Spec) The cylinder head and injectors (plus a few other bits) are different. To use the 16P engine in a Defender you will need to change the ECU - fuel map to suit later model injectors and manual transmission.

Hi Nomad ,Is there any reason why you want to change the injectrs over ?
I do beleve there were two types , early had black tops later had green ,I don't think they are interchangable ,also all the injectors , are maped to the ECU.I think that anything can be done , if you have the resolve the
equipment and the knowhow , you could also be opening a bag of worms . regards jimr1 ..

    Hi Jimr1,
Only to prevent changing the ECU, doesn't matter now, I'l find out what I've got on Saturday and I'll bet it is a 16P, not a 10P which will make changing over the injectors impossible anyway.
Thats OK, needed a challenge looks like I've got one. Thank goodness for Faultmate..
