    Remaps and EGT

Has anyone any experience on remaps and how it affects EGT and engine temp? After a touch more power for towing but don't want to affect reliability or have clouds of smoke everytime I hit the accelerator

A remap is going to put your EGTs up, how much depends on what else you've done to the car, how you drive, and what sort of tune you get.

I'm really happy with my TD5 remap set up for economy and towing by Jose at TD5Inside without EGTs going through the roof. An EGT gauge is a must for any significant adjustments and can teach you how to drive - I also like the (free) follow up service he provides if you are not completely satisfied/want some variations/not quite to your liking.
Strongly recommended, along with many others.

I've got a block temp gauge at the minute and use that to adjust driving when towing, after the same really economy and more poke when dragging the trailer, can you really have both?

Yes. But you need more boost. I'll put up a thread on this shortly. There is a simple and pretty much bolt in turbo upgrade that will give you more than you probably thought possible.

    Ned,

I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading the turbo at this point as it sounds like you're not after going the whole hog and turning it into a beast with the remap. Besides replacing the turbo with a VNT unit or such like starts getting expensive and would really require an intercooler cooler upgrade too, you would never pay the outlay off in fuel saving.

The TD5 responds well to a mild remap. In my experience you will be able to realise an increase in power without a negative effect on economy, perhaps a slight improvement, using the standard setup i.e. standard inter cooler and turbo. For the level of performance you are after the adjustment on the standard waste gate actuator rod will be sufficient to provide any increase in boost you will need. The cooling system is more than adequate to cope with the increase in power, that will not be a problem. As has been said EGT can be and needs to be monitored.

Once you have a pyrometer in and learn to drive by it you will start to drive more efficiently and burn less fuel, that's where the economy increase will come from and that will more than off set any increase in fuelling consequent with the remap.

As Gavin said Josie at TD5 inside provides a good service, but BAS and alive tuning also provide similar. I'd go with Josie because of the follow up service and he is a supporter of this forum too. From memory around $300 for a nano com based remap, perhaps $200 for a pyrometers and gauge. Do you have a Nanocom? If not happy to lend you one.

I'm always surprised when I come across someone with a TD5 that hasn't had it remapped. Such a beneficial modification for relatively little outlay.

    Ian.

So why bring in the cost of VNT turbos when no-one has raised the subject?

I have some 2.5tdi turbo revelations I'll share shortly. The results will surprise people.
