Thread: How much room with o offset with 255/85R16

Thanks frantic (Matthew isn't it? - I think we met during a Jellore SF trip a year or so ago - did you have a dark blue 110 with a couple of young kids on board?) - yeah I only need to push the tyres out a little bit. Would only be an issue in the event of an insurance claim I guess.

I have same attitude about insurance, as it helps stability by widening your track(you do notice going from normal +33 to 0 it feels more planted cornering)so the only thing that could be blamed for it to be the cause of an accident is if the wheel falls off, 40 nuts to ensure tight not 20,or it causes the bearings to fail. But if you fit 0 offset steel wheels your putting more strain on the bearings as they are heavier than factory boost alloys with aluminium/alloy spacer.


looked up a few, cant remember where I got mine but shop around as I found it may cost 10-20 pound more at one place but their postage is half the other price, so a cheaper total.

They seem to go from 90pound in uk - 155 pound($156-230 aussie) with one mob in Australia trying to charge $475, at that price it is to close to 5 new steel wheels.

I am ordering Kahn 18x8 wheels what is the widest size try I can fit on the rims with out modifying. And what should the new profile be to maintain the same circumference ?

I've got maxi drive-hytuff-qld rear axles and flanges and they fit with the 30mm spacers. Mine are a ring with recess for the axle bolts but no bits sticking up in the middle like the bulldog ones, just 5 recess holes and 5 studs.

Not dumb, only dumb question is one not asked or one already answered.
Most manufacturers and the big online tyre shops have recommended sizes.
Tyre rack is pretty good as they list all the sizes for a brand recommended width rim and range, so BFG-mud Km2 in 285/70 r18 are recommended for your wheel size and equal 33.7 inches , legal on a defender. The bfg 305/60 r18 is 32.6 inches and recommends 8.5 min width but talk to a tyre shop as you may get away with that.
It also depends what is in stock in Australia as they don't bring all sizes here.
Click on specs and there is rim width range along with overall size and a lot of other info.
