My experience from a few months ago with a ford ranger offroad. Good power and factory locker, Bad over bonnet visibility, terrible departure angle, big box section tow bar hangs down like a plough. can't see your wheels or side steps out the window because of the bulgy sides which makes manoeuvring hard, I think that's made worst because the seating position is that real sunken armchair feel sort of like a patrol, unlike a 75 series or a defender but your comparing very different vehicles

Earlier this year I stumbled on an article which highlighted the end of the Defender was nigh!

It made me bring forward my long term plan to get one and sold my good Prado and then had a four month wait for it to get built and delivered.

Had it now for about a month and absolutely love it. Kids tell everyone about how cool the car is and the wife will even admit to liking it when she thinks I can't hear her!

Completely different to anything else in my eyes and you get used to it - even in the city. I drive into the centre of Perth every day and so far have managed without a reversing camera even though it would make life a bit easier.

    D4 to 110

With respect to reversing camera, I bought one for under $50 and installed myself, it includes guide lines too. Took me half hour to calibrate distance and works a treat.
    Got it from http://www.rainbowlife.com.au/4-3-in...mera-e629.html

Anyone know how the Reversing Camera connected ot a device like Hema 7 is triggered, do you press an icon, or is it linked to a reversing light somehow,
apologies if im hijacking the thread.

Oh, do the in dash GPS/Stereo support the 4WD maps you may wish to use ?
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

    Hi Chuck,
With the demise of the defender as we know it coming soon, the bargaining chip might be a bit hard to play if people are starting to wake up and realise if they want one it has to be now.
Anyway, like people have said, the defender has a soul. It will be yours, like a finger print, no one has the same.
Put it this way, when oil runs out and bio diesel is too expensive, I'll be doing the electric conversion.
    Cheers and good luck

Camera has a link to the reverse light - comes on automatically (if the unit is turned on obviously).

I have the same with my VMS and I found it cumbersome to the point of not bothering with it. The Nav unit is usually stored away from prying eyes and I can't be asked to clip it and plug it in every time I get in the car. I love it for its navigation, but the camera is a bit too gimmicky to be functional.

If you really want the camera I would go double din for the stereo with RC feature (like Photodude suggested) and a separate Nav unit like Hema or VMS for off road navigation (they both take add-on maps - I run 1:50,000 for most of the areas I frequent).

    Cheers,

    Lou

If my kids have to choose between travelling with myself or going with their mother in her BMW X6, they always choose me because they love the Defender. And both are girls aged 3 and 5. They play spot the Defender as we cruise around town. For whatever reason they both love the challenge of getting in and out on their own and slamming the doors hard to close them, climbing all over the checker plate on the bonnet starting on the bulbar and being able to stand up inside and hang from the roll cage ( when not moving of course. ). To them it's like a cubby house on wheels.

Wait until you change the suspension out and add a little weight. The vehicle becomes perfect.
My reverse camera hangs center above the rear door, I also have one down low near the tow bar. But the rear door one provides
much better info and many people comment on how good it is to have that camera there as opposed to down low.
