    Defender. Brice highway. Near death.

Driving to Brisbane from Mackay. Came over a crest. A car over taking a truck right in front of me. Hit the brakes , went left, hit dirt, centromeres from the car. I pulled it back right and reckon I was on two wheels and there was a truck following. I'm now half in wrong side of road and shivering back to the left. ****ing nearly died. Can't believe it. Driving safely and some idiot passing on a blind bend+ crest it was so narrow- nowhere to go. Cannot believe how close I just can to death.

    Thanks mate.

Yeah. I suppose when it happened, round 1am I just felt I had to share the experience and although I've only met one mbet on the community in real life I found myself feeling that my fellow defender drivers are like brothers ( maybe because we are never in a rush...)

But yeah. Maybe me worry a lot less about kangaroos, when you see a car doing 120km about 30-50 meters in front of you and you doing 100kph

That stretch of road is crazy through the day and I will only drive it at night time. So many lunatics in a rush, pushing the pass by vehicles, I couldnt believe how bad it was when I drove to Rockhampton from Newcastle last Xmas. Doesnt sound like it's any safer at night as well.

Good to see your safe, and the fact you were in the Defender and driving slower then you would if you were in a more refined vehicle may have been the deciding factor in your survival.

Cheers. I am going back during the week. It was 542km from the caltex in sth Mackay, so wouldn't mind having a look at the road skid marks, see if he also skid at all.

I have had that experience many years ago (it was in my Series 2 and I was young and had good reflexes!). Heading east on the Ipswich bypass, just after it opened, in the slip road as it came over the railway before joining Ipswich Rd, I was overtaking a semi, and came over the crest and there was a car coming in the other direction! No stopping lanes, nowhere to go, panic stop, with thanks for having fitted a brake booster, and duck in behind the truck. Car behind me must have had good reactions too. I have no idea how the car going the wrong way managed to get there.

I was forced off the road into a big roadside sign near Taree years ago by a turkey overtaking on a blind crest. Wiped the side out of my Corolla on the sign post. Wrote the car off, they did.
Only good thing out of it was I decided we could have died then so I proposed to my girlfriend on the spot and she said yes. Still married.

    Very lucky mate.

Not so lucky was another Land Rover driver in a similar situation on the Dawson Highway near Calliope
