Third Row Seats For Defender 300Tdi

I got lost checking old thread in case this question had already been asked and answered. Luckily I'd packed a lunch. I'm buying a 95 300Tdi with ten seats. So the middle one has to go and be replaced with a cubby box as all my kids have two legs. The two factory fold ups in the back are, of course, sideways facing and with 5 daughters, two will have to sit there with the dog. Her Indoors is not keen on them staring at each other on long drives so I have been investigating forward facing folders.

I can buy exactly the right thing for a couple of grand... yeah, right. Not going to happen. I have seen lots of ads for HiAce seats on Gumtree. Single fixed seats from as low as $50, almost new, double seats $100. Folding ones come in around $350-500, second hand but with the seat belt mountings included and in good condition overall.

The question is; do I have to get them fitted professionally? Any idea how much a fitting station would demand? Has anyone an opinion on the original sideways facing seats and suitability for tweens and teens? Fortunately we no longer need child seats, those bars were an eyesore, if er, life saving. Thoughts, anyone?

First find yourself an Engineer that signs off on vehicle modifications and have a yarn about the options that you have identified.

Tell him ( or her ) that this work is to be done on a budget and with their advice you should be then right about getting it all done without any legal hiccups.

G'day Perry, I've fitted forward facing Pajero fold up seats (late 80's type from memory) to my 110 and they work really well. There was a fair bit of work involved fabricating the mounting points for the seat and also the seat belts, but if you are able to do this yourself you just need the engineer to check and approve these. I took a heap of photos at the time but lost the file somehow. I do however have one fairly ordinary photo which will give you some idea of what they look like.

Thanks for the responses and the photo, fellas. I am thinking this is not an urgent priority, but it is something I would like to get done asap. I might do some research on crash results for sideways facing seats. I believe they don't need seat belts as belts are for restraining forward facing passengers only.

I think you'll find you will need seat belts for sideways facing seats, but only lap belts. It should already have these unless someone has removed them.

I just had a 75 minute conversation with the seller and the seats have lap belts fitted, so all kosher, or is the halal? I might stick with the factory fitted sidies for now and save the shekels for other bits. There's bound to be other bits!

Maybe best to see how the girls go in the back first.

I have had some long drives in the back of mainly Land Cruiser Troopies for work a fair while back and often there was at least one or two other guys in the back. Not amazingly comfortable but we out put up with it.

Also having the ability to take extra people legally in my opinion would be gold.

I have got a new 110 and it has the two forward facing seats and they are great as they are proper seats. But I for the odd time we would use them I would have preferred the old style and been able to fit the extra kids in.
