Daytime Running Lights

Im also planning to upgrade my Perentie headlights. I suspect they are no better and likely worse than a contemporary Defender.

I would agree with Tombie's advice and am planning accordingly:

1. Upgrade wiring, add relays.
2. Upgrade bulbs
3. Replace headlight units (if req).

Narva appear to have a drop in replacement H4 housing, that includes integrated parking light bulbs. If going down this path, you could wire in the parkers to act as not-too-bright DRLs if you feel so inclined.

Edit: I have also seen replacements that feature CCL "Angel eyes". But in my personal opinion, these would look inappropriate on a Defender.

I'm in the process of fitting my DTRL's from the Disco to the Defender.
As mentioned they use a relay pack to turn off when the headlamps are on.
The light mine give off is more of a flood light similar to a dull spread beam work light.
This is what makes them unsuitable for low beam night work.


This job is being done along side fitting driving lights so all the wiring is in one conduit.
I've also fitted a Traxide head/driving light combo kit to help the low beam and switch issues.

I personally think these silly little lights on cars are ludicrous in our mostly bright weather. They may add to safety in grey northern hemisphere climes but believe that headlights on low beam when country driving are the way to go.
Silly little twinkle lights (like **** light fogs) which do more to feed the ego of the tossers that have them are next to useless.
And if you really want to annoy other drivers use those long light beam things asian vehicles have on their roof racks even during the day!!!

Personally and just asked around the site, most people say they can detect the DRLs long before headlights on Low beam - and even better when a vehicle is coming "out of the sun"

Remember also, DRLs are automatic, many people forget to tune headlights on... Especially during rain..

Would not turning on the lights be due to the dash being back lit?
Lots of folk drive down here at dawn/dusk with no lights but hey, they can see their speedo;)

We did the highway run a while back, storm thumping almost zero visibility and people were driving with no lights on at all.

Drop out to see if it's safe to pass and out of the dark/rain a dark coloured vehicle would appear!

So bloody dangerous!

At least a DRL would have given them away.

Some people seem totally oblivious to just how dangerous the roads can be!

I have decided to replace my headlight assemblies with the Narva units. I will hard wire the Narva parking lights to the ignition, so they light up the reflectors.

While they wont be as bright as DRLs or even low beam, the fact that the whole lamp is glowing, should give reasonable visibility i think. I may even upgrade the parking globes to brighter LEDs. As long as i dont get labelled a ****** for making them too bright.

Only concern i have is a vague memory of some ADR that states if forward facing lights are on, then tail lights must also be lit.

Anyone know if this would apply in this case? Not sure if DRLs need tail lights on, but what about DIY DRLs such as my idea above?

There's probably some rules to ruin your plan, DBT, especially about LED bulb replacements. I'm sure someone will be along soon to inform you, even if it isn't even for your state. :o

IIRC, they are ADRs not NSWDRs :p
