Puma Intermittent Loss of accelerator pedal response

My 2007 Puma will occasionally lose all response from the accelerator pedal. It's an intermittent problem, so difficult to demonstrate to someone. Here's a description...

? Intermittent and most of the time doesn't happen
    ? No engine malfunction light
    ? No fault codes
    ? Engine at operating temperature
? Usually throttle response completely lost after changing to a higher gear
? Can also be a problem changing to a lower gear under load (eg up hill)
? Usually overcome after tickling accelerator pedal back and forth, but likely to play up on each successive gear change
? One way I have been able to avoid the problem, is not dropping revs between gear shifts
? If I shut down the engine for 5-10 minutes, the problem disappears
? It may not malfunction for several days or longer. It disappeared for over 12 months after the first series of issues

I've checked connections to the accelerator pedal, turbo, etc, and they appear fine. Anyone have this experience before?

    Brid,

Sounds like the throttle position sensor (the one above your right foot) might be on the way out or at least in need of TLC if you are so inclined.

Land Rover's diagnostics will most probably pick it up even though it doesn't show a fault. My car had done something similar with the ABS switch. It showed no fault, but randomly activated the TC when I drove over a speed bump.

Not sure about the main dealers your side of the world, but I would certainly let our local have a look even if I don't let them fix it.

    Cheers,

    Lou

    Thanks Lou

I'll ask Land Rover if they can identify it as faulty by their diagnostics.

    Cheers

Just a quick update...the problem seems to have abated at least for the moment (remembering that it is an intermittent problem). I have also had a chance to remove and clean the accelerator pedal potentiometer contacts, as well as the clutch sensor connections. Nothing appeared too dirty, but it wouldn't take much resistance to foul signals, I guess.

My 2003 130 has been doing it intermittently for quite a while. Usually when it's cold, drive off in first gear, and not much more than idle despite depressing the accelerator then suddenly it takes off. Annoying at worst.

Here's an interesting possibility. On the 2.4 Puma engine, if the brake lights go on for whatever reason for more than 10 seconds the engine cuts back to idle and will not respond to the throttle. IS there any chance your brake light switch is intermittently sticking or perhaps the wiring shorting out?

We had TPO probs in Newman with our 2003 Td5 years ago. It would tick over all day and run like a dream until....cough splutter splutter and then engine would sometimes cut out.
RACWA of course knew nothing, local expert knew nothing but to give him his due he was good on older vehicles. None of the service type people would even look at it as it wasn't a Tojo.
No one diagnosed it right over the phone so onto a flatbed back to Perth (took nearly 3 weeks as it had a camper on the back and truckies didn't want to take it!!!!) and Rovertech sorted it out for me.
Then I found out the stealer would have fixed it for free.......
    Good luck.

What did they do to fix it exactly?
