Thread: Puma Injector Upgrade

Myself and my wife and four children ust completed a 6500km trek from Broome to Augusta down the coast road, and returned by the inland route with lots of driving in between with our 08 Defender and offroad trailer. On our first day, 28th December 2014, we encountered 55 degree temps halfway between Port Hedland and Karratha. Not only did we melt our aircon compressor, but we had an issue start with our injectors that made the engine make a terrible noise once it was at running temperature and under load or when you took your foot off the accelerator.

Got the car to Perth and got Southern Land rover to do a 80,000k service and look at the aircon, no compressor in Australia but lucky that Tony's Wreckers had a 2012 puma in the yard so got the compressor and Southern Land rover fitted it. We asked them to diagnose the horrible piston slap, injector rattle that had progressively got worse but they reported that the engine sounded just like a defender and there was nothing wrong it.

on our return from Augusta we travelled through Nannup to Ballingup which is a windy hilly road that only allows you travel at an average of 70 km per hour and the knocking rattley noise from the engine was really worrying. On reaching Dardanup we spoke with friends and they suggested we go to Gerry Panuccio in Bunbury and get him to have a look. Gerry took a lot of time trying to help and identified the problem as an injector issue, and because we were going through to Perth Gerry called Kevin from Rovertech in Bentley who straight away said you need an injector upgrade and bring it in and we will fix it.

On getting to Perth on the 24th January 2015 took the car in and the guys in Rovertech attached the diagnostic machine to our car and uploaded our info then took that to the computer and sent it to England (UK) and they uploaded the upgrade and the guys at Rovertech downloaded the information to my engine through a learning exercise through the diagnostic machine and the problem was fixed. We travelled back to Broome (2200ks) with a car that travelled really well.

If any other Puma owners have a similar problem I would recommend getting the injector upgrade done.

I would also like to commend Gerry Panuccio in Bunbury and the team at Rovertech in Bentley a suburb of Perth. Well done it shows our cars are really unstoppable when we have quality technical support behind us. I am grateful.

Sounds like a remap and pilot relearn was done. Imperative for correct operation of the injectors hence the change in sound. The duratorq engine can be a noisy little so and so.a popular thing to do is also to add a little 2 stroke oil to the fuel. About 100 mls per 75 litres. This in itself can shut them up sometimes. I am guessing that the remap was also done to disable the egr system. Another good thing to do to the puma engine.
