New or Rebuilt R380 Gearbox in Sydney

hm, had quite a few issues with underdrive and heard from a well know gearbox place that there are some issues with the AC gearbox and that they had a few in to fix. Does one of you have the AC gearbox?

I did my R380 last year, my three options were a change over reco from a bloke in the Hunter Valley on ebay, have my local Land Rover repairer remove it and send it to someone who I can't remember his name, or an Ashcroft.

All were within $15 of each other cost wise, the Ashcroft offered upgraded 5th gear bearings, but Ashcroft had none in stock and I would have to wait until they did one, then sending it. They also sent me an email about warranty issues, and I thought if there are any I have to send it back to the UK.

As it was I could not wait so I had it rebuilt locally, as I said I can't remember his name, but someone on here should. I think he was Windsor way.

Again for Ashcrofts, was cheaper than getting one here with freight, bearing upgrade and core exchange fee. Work that out.
Contact Dave at Ashcrofts and he will discuss with you.
They dont often have one on the floor as they are built to order. I think from time of ordering until it was at my door was 3 weeks total.
Yes you can get one here for a similar price ( a little dearer than Ashcrofts) but it will be a standard rebuild and you will have to exchange your old box.
Then depending on where you live you will have to add freight. Put the cost for one for me buying in Australia around $3k and then only if my box was suitable for rebuild, if not was then $1000 core exchange.

have a price here from Award Diffs in Seven Hills for AU$2100 for a rebuilt that includes everything incl. syncros and installation but not shafts or gears if they need replacement. I know my syncros are gone. Advantage I guess is local warranty and the truck only 3 days off the road. But will call Dave tonight and see pricing and what he can offer.

Modern Motors at Dungog had about half a dozen sitting on the floor ready to go when I was last there. Might be worth a call.

ok after doing my research I decided to go with Award Diffs in Seven Hills, they doing it for a long time and also do most LR Warranty work on diffs and gear boxes.

Terry and Trish took quite a bit of time elaborating the options and where so far great to deal with.

The Ashcroft syncros are not stronger (for good reason) and I like to have a one stop shop I can drop the car back in to in case there should be any issues.

Award Diffs makes the same small modifications AC does and only uses quality parts like Timken bearings etc.

The will also look in to why the Ashcroft Underdrive walks out of gear which is quite dangerous on steep decents.
