Tdi - what would cause a short squeaking sound above idle?

A family doing the Sydney UK overland run need some help. Here's their email:

Evening Max,

A technical question. We had some pretty rough roads and dust like talcum powder on the back end of Myanmar. Got a few extra rattles, which are manageable. Occassionally and it is normally at about the same rev point (just above idle) and when not under load, there will be a short squeaking sound. Any ideas or anyone in the club that may be able to assist? Currently in Dimapur after a pretty interesting entry into India. Got stopped by a blockade and ended up camping in a Commando camp for a couple of days. Everyone very friendly, kind and helpful. Certainly not a contiki tour.

Any ideas? I've asked if it sounds like a belt or more of a mechanical sound, and when the timing belt was last changed.

Hi Max, I had a similar noise in my car it was the serpentine belt. There is a small wire (brass or steel) brush similar size to a tooth brush, you can buy them most places. I held against the belt drive side while the engine was running. and against the pulleys I could access, it solved the problem. good luck simmo

May also be the tensioner (or bearing) on its way out, or one of the idler bearings.

Bushie, has reminded me of another squeak I had, it was the tensioner wheel for the cam belt. I pulled off the front cover and removed the tensioner. No spare was available at the time, so I washed out the bearing with petrol, ( after gently removing the grease seal) Repacked the bearing with HTB, (wheel bearing grease) put the seal back in. The bearing never gave a problem or noise for the next 30,000 kms when it was changed out on routine basis. I did fit my spare toothed belt , but the existing belt was fine

agree with Bushie, serpentine belt tensioner bearing

Most likely has dust between the tensioner bearing and it's dust cover,give it a soak with lube spray. Pat

Check the alternator, had a couple fail , starting with a short sharp squeak before bearing failure and belt destruction. Its a little bushie but if you have a longhandeld straight through screw driver. Use that to locate the source of the squeak when the TDIs at idle.

This would certainly be my guess. In my experience, it will need attention sooner rather than later.
