    clutch fork ball

    hello all, well i have managed to remove the gearbox and associated torture devices and have found my problem with the clutch was the ball that the clutch fork rests in has pushed it way through the fork. no worries as i have all new parts. however the big question is.... i am able to pull the ball joint that the clutch fork sits in,out. is this normal behavior or should i lock tight it in. is it buggered altogether and i need that whole new piece that goes over the shaft and connects to the wall of the bell housing. i hope i haven't been too confusing attached is a picture, sorry it is a little blurry but you can see the small ball joint to which the clutch fork rests in

    What is in your picture looks like part number FTC5218 (clutch release guide).
    When replacing the clutch fork make sure the little plastic clips are on properly, (they break easily too).

    Edit: re; the ball that the clutch fork pivots on that I think that you are referring to,
    It is just a pivot and locating point for the clutch fork, which is held in place at one end by the sliding metal bits (clutch release bearing pads) and one small plastic clip to hold the top pad in place, and at the other end held in by the clutch slave cylinder push rod and another small plastic clip that holds the ball end of the push rod in place to stop it falling out (this clip is a bit of a bugger and breaks easily).

    I can't see the photo. But if its the clutch fork you can either make or buy a reinforced one. Rovacraft sell them. A piece of metal is welded behind where the ball contacts the fork. Not sure if this is helpful though.

    When I repair these I put a smear of molybdenum grease on the ball.

    If you mean where the swivel ball pin sits in the bracket part of the bell housing the answer is that it does just that, no clip or fastener at all and don't ask me how I know!!
    Don't know why they were designed like that to be honest, maybe there is a reason?? If I did the clutch job again I would look at modding it somehow to fasten the swivel pin into that bracket....

    I've got a 300tdi by the way, I was assuming you do as well so my apologies if not!

    The pin should be a tight press fit in the bracket of the guide and if it moves about, that whole bracket would need replacing.

    Well that makes sense then, thanks! I was able to pull the pin out quite easily by hand on myn so I just presumed that's how they were, which was silly I guess!! Oh well though, next time..
