    Swivel hub grinding noise

    Hey

Last night I put heavy duty swivel hubs on the front of my 98 300tdi 130 as the old ones were stuffed.
Driving it today there is a grinding noise occasionally that appears to be coming from the swivel hub area.

I have recently replaced the swivel chrome ball seal and swivel pin bearings. and the cv was is good condition and the bearings spin well and have no play.

I noticed there were wear marks inside the chrome ball, from what looked like the swivel rubbing but had never heard it happen.
Can this happen? This seems most likely.
Could it be anything else rubbing?
    Why would this happen?

    Cheers for any input.

Do you mean the CV has been rubbing inside the chrome ball. If they have been replaced did you check that the new ones were the same diameter and length. Another thing is the shims on the CV shaft under the circlip on the outside of the drive flange that take up the slop. If the CV can move that could make the noise especially when you turn.

Hey, yeah as if it was rubbing inside the ball.
The shims are in and have minimal movement.
The stub axle has a lot of lateral play in it when the drive flange is removed. Is that normal? I would have thought there wouldn't be heaps.

After more driving it appears that it only makes the grinding sound on sharp right hand corners and more so under acceleration (the noise appears to be coming from the RHS).
I'm about to take it apart and have a look. Hopefully I find something.

It was a "what appears to have once been a bearing" on the stub axle next to the cv. Getting a new one tomorrow.
