I am wanting a litre as you usually can't get less. The level is a third down from maximum and will top up as needed, the engine doesn't NEED a litre. As for babying it, it normally does short trips or long drives pulling a 1200kg trailer. So probably the worst of both worlds.

yakking to Castrol as I need 1lt to add to some superseded SLX Professional for the next change.
It is true the correct oil for Australian, non-DPF 2.2 or 2.4 puma's as specified by Land Rover is Castrol Edge Professional A5, 5w30. Catalogue number 3377780. The A5 spec is important. The smallest drums it comes in are 20L. Cost about $220 plus, of about $12Lt
However for top up in 1lt quantity, Castrol Edge A3B4 5w30. Catalogue number 3388428. Commonly found at Repco, Supacheap, Auto Barn and so on. For around $25 plus
I was advised the A3B4 is fine for top ups, but use the Professional A5 for the change. I guess if you have the bottle, decant some Professional A5 as top up.

I recently purchased some Penrite synthetic oil for my 2013 DPF fitted (unfortunately)Defender. I was caught out by the fact that the dealers don't sell engine oil (what a joke) as a spare part (nor diff, gearbox, etc.) so had to get the right oil for emergencies. DPF oil for Defender is not easy to find.
Repco said they had the appropriate oil on special 30-40% off and so it cost me $70.00 for 5 litres which I thought was O.K. On my trip I stopped at Auto Pro in Cobar NSW and they had the same oil (not on special) for $50.00. Shop around!
I cannot believe that my local dealer will not sell top up or larger volumes of oils for maintenance purposes. It is a commercial vehicle for goodness sake! It is ridiculous that these specialised oils are not sold by the dealers. You would be lucky to find them in the bush.

Even if you don't use Total or cannot get Total products you can use this as a guide and get something else to the same specs.
My 2008 was fully "Totaled" i.e. engine, gearbox, diffs etc. I found it to be very satisfactory and would recommend Total oils.
Well said 4wheeler. It's just another example demonstrating that Land Rover have become entirely focussed on the urban image of being bush capable, rather than supporting their customers who actually spend their time using their vehicles in remote places. The back to dealer for all servicing strategy is effectively holding the customer to ransom, when service agents are so few and far between. And then even when a customer wants do do the right thing and keep the correct spare oil for bush trips and the dealer won't sell it to the customer! Well that's bordering on blackmail!
By the way, which 2.2 Defenders don't have DPF?
Some of the dealers here in Melbourne will sell the oils, problem is the mark up they put on it.
They buy in bulk for engine and diff, 200 ltr drum's, so you have to bring your own container, but they will sell it to you by the litre. I haven't seen the BOT328 or transfer case oils in such large quantities. They have the BOT328 in litre containers, and generally transfer case comes in 20 litres.
I bought my gearbox oil from rovercraft, $63.24 per litre. The dealer wanted $99.
Thanks spudfan, I too would also highly recommend Total oils especially for the engine. Total Quartz 9000 Future NFC 5w30 (Ford WSSM2C913-C backwards compatible with WSSM2C913-B ). $67.20 for 5 litres from the guys at Ballarat Bolts and Fastners. There is a Total supplier in Port Melbourne, just can't remember who at the moment.

I have been stuffing around looking up DPF info this afternoon and before coming back to this thread and your post, I found the thread from 18 months ago discussing DPFs on 2.2's including some photos. Assuming that this information is correct, from what I can work out from that information (October 2013) is that mine does not have a DPF as there are no wires exiting the large plug on the top of the exhaust assembly. This means that my owner manual and those on the Land Rover Topix site are wrong as they have sections relating to DPF in the manuals. I therefore thought mine had one. I am now just so much happier knowing I don't have to worry about it. That explains why I have not seen the warning lights on the dash related to the DPF!
I suppose if any owners have had the DPF indicator light come up on that dash then that complicates matters big time. If nobody reports a dash light then we can probably assume they don't have them.
I had my Defender serviced (2 year) Friday and asked the service supervisor about them and if 2015 models had them or not based on the fact I thought mine had one. He wasn't 100% sure so he asked his more experience supervisor. I heard his supervisor say to him that he didn't think any Defenders them. The supervisor I was dealing with returned and said 2015 don't have them (but he did not say mine did not have one).
Oil pump was replaced as part of the service action related to some faulty pumps. Dealer did a good job.
Assuming all this information is correct, I can now use the more freely available synthetic oils rather than the DPF specific in my Defender.
