    Defender appliance

    Hey Chris

As your brigade is providing a fire fighting service how is it that you had to provide the funds to obtain the Defender? Surely the state Gov should have stumped up the required funds.
In WA we have the ESL where everyone pays a levy when they pay their rates. This money equips all the states Brigades.

We have wanted a second appliance for a while but RFSQ is not expanding their fleet. We asked how we could get a second truck and if we pay for it ourselves on the understanding it wont be replaced and the truck conforms with certain conditions. There are a few loopholes allowing brigades to get trucks with their own money some brigades for example are purchasing support vehicles which are easy to get permission for and then later when they have them asking permission to fit hoses and pumps to them. We have one 51 fire truck, but we have needed to use a slip on unit on my F truck every year as the 51 cant always get access. I was fed up with my own truck getting a flogging, actually a few years back it almost got burned out so we started to look into how we could legally get another fire truck. The new Land Rover will be added to the fleet, but maintenance and replacement is our problem which is fine by me as the alternative was my own car.

In our RFB we use slip on units oon our own vechiles pretty much the whole time. There are 2 RF appliances based in town for use by the surronding brigades, but by the time you drive 40km, only to find the last user failed to refuel, replace items, it is much better to use your on 4wd and slipon. We have never had a prob with getting tyres and such like replaced by the RFQ if we damage them, even had a windscreen replaced after a limb fell on a members cruiser. And the RF trucks are hopeless offroad!

My F truck has blistered paint, a dented door and wing as battle scars from fire fighting I am fed up of the damage so very happy to have the new truck. Yes They with shout you a tire, but firefighting is not good for you own truck.

Yes a 51 is the biggest fire truck the rural's have, a 41 is smaller and a 15 is a ute.
The 51 is great, but it cant turn round in some restricted accesses, the 51 is amazing off road, but so often we need to dive in with water quickly the Land Rover will be amazing for this.

If we do get the RFB units we use them as refill tankers for our slipons. Used that way we can maintain a constant presence on the fireline with a couple of full units. And the 4wd utes have a faster response time to any line break than the 51, as you will find with the defender. I am the only defender in among the cruiser utes here gotta keep the flag flying!

We have the big Urban truck from town in big fires to keep water topped up. The new truck should be on the fleet in a few weeks ready for the fire season, I can see myself running to the Defender if I am not in incident control
