Thread: It may not always be positive but in a Defender you always get comment..

I had a mature lady give me the thumbs up the other day,she was driving in a Toyota Echo with what I assume was her daughter,I gave her a funny stare so she held a copy of LRO to the window,I get a lot from the high school kids up the road. Pat

Today I picked up my son from his school. As I drove into the pickup area I got a number of 'cool car' comments from the boys. My son has mentioned a few times our black 110 is the coolest car at the school. Believe me there is some pretty stiff competition at his school.

The other day I took George to work because I had a late meeting, so the wife went separately. A burly Pacific Islander staffer made a point of stopping me to say he and his kids love it when I bring in George because, "That's a real truck!"

I've found the positive comments outweigh the negative, even living in Land Cruiser/Hilux central.

Had a couple of different Land Cruiser and Patrol blokes say they couldn't keep up with somone's old 110 offroad.

The best was an American Polo player getting ready for some stick and ball at a local Polo place saying "cool Land Rover man..."

The young bloke that lives in the place behind here has a tricked up 80 Series and he just loves the Deefer, reckons it's the coolest sounding car he's heard

On our recent trip to Exmouth (we camped in the National Park) we were walking to the beach past the American backpackers and the girl pointed to our site and said 'Cool Truck' I've got an old Disco back home in America."

I tend to ignore any negative comments but will happily chat to anyone about them. I find in general most people who stop to say something are jealous.

We carpool with a few other families for the school runs. I do after school pickup once a week. Apart from the kids thinking the defender is cool there is a small group of older grandpas I chat to as we wait for the school bell. They too admire the Defender.

The Chinese Malaysians tend to notice car rego numbers. They will usually spend a little to get to choose, if not auspicious numbers, at least numbers that are not an embarrassment. When I was asked whether I wanted to buy a rego number or just take the luck of the draw - even my (Chinese Malaysian) wife said to wing it. Can't be so unlucky to get really bad numbers. Famous last words.

Loosely translated the 4 numbers in my car rego equate to "(my) todger is non-functional". The family all had a good laugh. Occasionally others notice and comment.

One day the school grandpas noticed and elbowed each other smirking. One gamely asked me if I knew what my numbers mean. I explained that, yes, since I married a Chinese Malaysian I understand the fascination and knew of the hidden meanings of numbers - said my wife explained to me my numbers mean: "your wife will always love you". They LAUGHED and complimented me on having such a fine and very clever wife!

Until today all comments had been good, across 25,000km, 3 states and a territory; best was a group of young blokes walking past, unaware I was there, saying to each other, in awed tones, "you could go anywhere in that".

Today I got the "I wouldn't buy one". He said he had been up to Cape Yorke years back in his mates TD5 and gave 2 reasons:

(A) The stock 110 didn't ride the deep ruts as well as his mates cruiser with 2" lift and big tyres. Not exactly apples with apples then...
( it got stuck in a water crossing when his mate, being pulled by another vehicle, went too hard and wrapped the snatch around the front axle. Driver error clearly the vehicles fault......

He was driving a Prado, and seemed pleased to be getting 20 to the 100....
