I had a Phantom 2 and it was very easy to fly and maintain. This is several generations old now so they've sorted out a lot of the issues. Strong wind would be its main nemesis since it's not a big thing.

You can buy prop guards for it and various people online have come up with home-made ways to make it buoyant if it splashes down - foam balls, foam rings or empty water bottles attached to the bottom.
How easy is it to remove the camera if you want to attach a different payload?

I wonder whether a solar panel charger might give you better charge on the LiPo batteries than an inverter.

    Just thinking out aloud.

Your video was fantastic (lived in Africa for 5 years), you inspired me and I have just ordered a Phantom 4.
    Thanks

I have a couple of multicopters and from what I've been led to believe you're best off charging the lipo batteries at the lowest amperage you can, due to safety concerns regarding their potential to ignite. At 0.5amps and 12 volts my 4000mah batteries take an eternity to charge so I would expect solar charging would take an unreasonabe amount of time - but I stand to be corrected

Christie Engineering make a tiny petrol generator. I don't know if it would be suitable for your needs.

I got a demo of a quadcopter at work the other day used by Select in Vic for power line inspections. All carbon fibre twin rotors on each arm to stabilize. Gimbal with separate control. About $80 K worth of gear. Shame battery life hasn't made any huge advances.

Was fun to watch the demo. Got to get a quadcopter. I also got a demo in Perth a few years back of Cybertech's Quadcopters and the drones they build. Fascinating stuff.

Having spent the last 6 months on the road in our Unimog we have loads of video footage from the Phantom 3 Pro and hundreds of photos. I have 5 batteries, and three chargers. It takes 1 hour to charge each battery, and it draws 10A using the inverter. So basically 10A/h per flight. We have 450AH of battery storage, and 650W of solar, so charging the flight batteries is not a problem for us like it was in the Defender with only an 85W panel.

We have flown the Phantom over 250km in total, 117 flight and 20hrs, it has performed fantastic. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a solid reliable

The upgraded firmware has quite a few modes. "Follow Me" - FM, "Point of Interest" POI and "Waypoints"

I've used the FM and the POI a bit, not use the Waypoints

This one was shot in "Follow Me" mode. It works OK, not as smooth as I would like. It works best in open country, but you have to be careful as if you are driving up a slope, the drone will stay at the same level, and will crash into the ground.

It does enable you to get fantastic footage from places you normally can't get to.

The camera works great, and I use it more than the video.
