    Insurance, with who?

    IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING!

After a few years in the wilderness(disco 2), I'm returning to the fold and getting a 130.
And I could not be more excited.

However there is the problem of insurance and market value.

I don't know what markets the insurance twits base this on, but many will not insure it for what I am paying.

So.... Who do you use? What are the prices? Where and what do they cover?

I got a quote from Shannon's for just over the 1k.

    All input is appreciated.

Brand new 110 $512 with Budget Direct. $550 with AAMI.

Took the Budget direct option (via Iselect) as they threw in a $100 Myer card, so all up $412 for a year.

Your better off buying through Iselect, they are cheaper than direct.

I don't know on the agreeing of value, whether this mob is good for that or not...but we have had two claims through budget direct, and they have been great. And they generally tend to be the cheapest...AND they don't seem to put their premiums up, after your first year with them, as a lot of others seem to do.

Will you be using it off road? If so, ensure that you are covered for use in any geographic area within Australia - some policies only cover you on gazetted roads.

If you are planning to add accessories (bull bar etc) then they may need to be listed on your policy. Some companies have extremely restricted coverage for accessories.

And finally, are you planning any modifications? If so, will your insurance company accept those modifications? Will they insure those modifications?

My coverage with Allianz gives full off road coverage anywhere in Aus, whether gazetted road or virgin bush/beach, and agreed value which includes all accessories.

Only minor hiccup in the process was that the agreed value is about 130% of (second hand) purchase price (got a good deal) with the fitted accessories and they had to have a bit of a think about that before offering coverage. Touch wood no claims yet

I originally got a quote through a "specialist" 4x4 broker, but my financial institution obtained the same coverage from the same insurer for about $200 less that the broker quoted. Nice work (markup) if you can get it.

I am happy with full comprehensive off road agreed value coverage for under $800.

I went with Land Rover branded insurance, which is basically an Alliance policy.

It covers all locations and terrains (beaches, rivers, non-gazetted roads etc), all the modifications & fitted accessories, guarantees genuine replacement parts, and 3 year new vehicle replacement (not sure how this will work out when it's not in production any more, but at the very least, the full purchase price and accesories will be covered).

If you plan to drive off-road, be comfortable with what roads your insurance is not covered for.

I'm with Shannons as I found them to be the only ones who were aware that my Deefer is a limited edition and they valued it accordingly. I'm covered both on and off road, my accessories (bullbar, gullwing windows, built in fridge, roof rack, winch etc) are also covered. I pay $120 a month and I'm happy with that. Your premium will depend a lot on where you live though.

After much scratching around went with RACQ, but we seem to be eligible for every discount available, so that helped.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

    Shannon's it is.
After spending the day on the phone, to be told over and over that the market value is 9 to 13 thousand, and that everyone else won't offer 20k cover because the car will be financed.

What market do these townks get their prices from. I wish I could buy a good condition 130 td5 for what they think its worth.

$1011.13 per year with $600.00 excess. Shannon's get my business. And when the piddly loan is paid off the premium comes down.

    Thanks all for the replies.

We might be able to keep it going to find the best deals.

I have been with Shannons for about 10 yrs now. Always been great to deal with. Annoyingly twice my wife's car was crashed into while parked (neither of us present at the time) and all dealt with easily.
