    Tyre Suitability?

Early days yet with my new 90!

But I am planning a big trip around OZ at some point and am mulling getting some HD steel wheels (Wolf) which are 6.5J X 16 with an good AT tyre to replace the standard skinny standard Michelin Latitude Cross 7.5 R X 16c on my 5.5 inch steel wheels.

The Michelin Latitude Cross has some pretty good reviews, but is it up to sand etc? I am not going to Cape York, so don't really need a full on MT tyre like the OEM Goodyear Wrangler, more like the OEM Continental Cross Contact AT.

It seems a bit nuts to just put a new set of wheels and tyres aside if I don't have too!

    Thoughts most welcome please!

    Cheers, Pete.

    Hi Pete

My olds have Michelin Latitude Cross's 205/R16 on their '94 Discovery.

Last winter they went half way across the Simpson and then North to the Plenty Hwy, then west etc etc with a few other vehicles.

Essentially, for the Disco it was a walk in the park, helped in part by the Michelins. Got up Big Red first go without a problem. They are completely fine in sand, as were the earlier 205 Michelins they had.

The two new Hiluxes and one brand new Triton they were travelling with had more trouble everywhere they went and they all had wider tyres.

At one stage it looked like the Triton wouldn't be able to continue due to the trouble it was having with the terrain.

Actually, I just read that yours are 7.50 not 205. They should still be fine when aired down.
The thing working in the 90's favour is its relatively light weight.

Bridgestone D661 235/85R16 are the wise choice IMHO

The tyres will be fine. If your D90 is post 2007, the rims will be 6.5 inches not 5.5. I believe all D90s sold in Au come standard with alloy rims, not steel. The Wolf rims will be heavier, and that has implications. You don't need them. Spend your money on some real improvements. I can vouch for a D90 being a great touring vehicle when well set up. Be wise.

Sounds like he's got standard steel rims Karl, they come new w Michelin Latitude Cross.

Hey Yolo, I had the same. Those Michelins are very susceptible to punctures on rocky roads I found. So I did what you're thinking...swapped to HD steel rims with Bridgestone 661's as mentioned. Kept the White classics with Michelin tyres for posterity.

    Cheers.

Yes guys, I do have the standard 'classic' 5.5 inch 'solid' steel rims! So the question is can the Michelins be 'stretched' one inch wider to the 6.5J wheels!

Interesting comment about 'punctures'... Not a good plan outback eh!

I will second Mr Landy , had two long range dessert trips with bridgestone D661s and they performed great . Still unmarked whist a new set of bfg at/s well chipped up all over. But flashy tyres with white lettering look cool and theres no shortage of those carcases scattered throughout central aust , is there ?.
