    R380 issue

    Hi all

Was hoping someone out there could help.

I have a td5 Deefer, so an R380 gearbox. I was coming back on the highway and had to change back to 4th, and as I got close to 3000 revs the gearbox started whining, badly. The sort of noise that says back off immediately.

I did some testing, it feels and sounds fine up until 2,600 when you can faintly hear something if you try hard enough.

The only other gear it does it in is 3rd, but you need a few extra revs before it does it.

I had the gearbox stripped and rebuilt about 9000kms ago - so unsure what it could be. Research points to the shared 3rd/4th synchro considering it comes from both gears but unsure. Any thoughts anyone?

    Thanks in advance.

    Joe

I'm guessing the answer will be bearings. My question is who rebuilt the box and what brand bearings were used? It seems if you source them locally it's near impossible to get OEM brand as they don't make them anymore. Which could explain such an early failure. Although hopefully it is something more cheap and simple...

    '86 County 110 Isuzu

That's what I thought - I have contacted the place who did the rebuild for me, I don't see how 9k kms is acceptable, so hopefully it will be done for free but we shall see.

    Thanks for the input!

1 year or 20,000km warranty on all work done by them. Coupled with excellent service the first time around and a great price, can't be bothered with that.

Taking it on on Thursday, will report back.

When 4th is selected, the input shaft & output shafts are locked together for direct drive. If there's a bearing on the way out, 4th gear is normally the quietest.

If the bearing between the input & output shafts goes, 4th can be hard to select & it will be noisy in all gears (bar 4th) with the noise increasing with the torque load up to 5th.

If it's noisy in 4th at a certain rev range & noisy in 3rd at a higher rev range, does this equate to the same road speed? If so, it may be something at the back of the gearbox or even in the transfer case.

The difference between rev range is marginal to be honest, and it happens in both high and low so not road speed related.

There's not too many LR gearbox specialists in Sydney so I assume Awards did it. If so, they'll be more than capable of sorting it out.

    Absolutely spot on!

Amazing service before, and no questions asked just said bring it back in and we will test drive immediately and then book it in if it needs it.

I recommend them to anyone who needs work done.
