    Sy Klone Sizing

Hi All, I am in the process of placing an order for so a Sy Klone head for a safari snorkel. I have noticed a few guys on here have the Sy Klone and wanted to know sizing and fitting dimensions etc. The supplier has calculated my requirements and said the inlet size to the Sy Klone is 5'' and needs a 2'' reducer to suit a 3''mm safari? Could anyone shed any light on the situation as the Sy Klone head seems to be a touch oversized??

Send a PM to member Nugget on the forum. He is a super-duper fabricator and has developed (amongst many other practical things) an adaptor that allows the SyKlone head to fit the Safari body. I have one of his adaptors fitted to Agnes and it is rock solid.

If I had more than two thumbs up, they'd all be up for Nugget.

    Cheers,

Yeah I would certainly be buying his part. But this is an extension to raise the head above the car body. In most photos I have seen of defenders with Sy Klones, the inlet for the head is a similar size to the safari snorkel. But the supplier indicated I would need a 2" reducer on the Sy Klone to suit the smaller safari unit? Has anyone installed a Sy Klone on a 2.2 Puma and can measure dimensions?

I don't have any experience with the Sy Klone, but if you're specifically looking for dust separation be careful about going for too big a size.

I run a Donaldson pre-cleaner (one of the round clear bowl types). I sized it up according to engine max air consumption and ended up with the 300mm bowl (I think!!) and a 75mm inlet. I did a trip to Cape York a few years back with a mate who had a smaller Donaldson, but same 75mm inlet.
He ended up with much more dust in the bowl than I did on any given leg. Identical engines and gearing so assuming he wasn't traveling constantly in someones else's dust I'm guessing that because we were just cruising mine didn't have enough airflow to create the air velocity for efficient dust separation.
Yes, a smaller unit will create more of a restriction. In my case I run the pre-filter in dusty conditions, and just a normal snorkel head otherwise.

Food for thought if nothing else

I have a sy-klone fitted to my 300Tdi, and cant see any reason why you would need anything bigger for the 2.2.
Sizing came direct from Sy-klone in Brisbane, over the phone, coupled with the adaptor from Nuggetstuff it's pretty neat.
Unfortunately I can't lay my hands on the receipt to give you the model #

    Found receipt it's a 4 inch Sy-klone series 9001R precleaner for 275-350cfm

Ordered from LSM Technologies 07 37258100

    Dimensions are here

Thanks Martyn, I think I will just give them a call instead of emailing. Your Sy Klone unit definitely does not appear to be 5'' !

    Hi again,

I looked back over my records. Mine is a "9001" model pre-cleaner. The following text comes straight from my invoice from LSM Industries:

    "4-inch Sy-Klone Series 9000 Precleaner for 100 to 275 CFM"

    I have a 2014 110 Wagon, with the 2.2 TDCI.

Back when I bought my SyKlone it was $284.90 including GST.

    Company details are as follows:

    LSM Technologies Pty Ltd
    ABN: 41 944 773 938
    Ph: +61 (0)7 37258100 / Fx +61 (0)7 37258199 16 Bluestone Circuit
    Seventeen Mile Rocks QLD 4073
    Australia

I spoke to Peter Woodford. Very helpful fellow.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Martyn, hopefully that clarifies everything. I also have a 110 wagon 2015. So not sure where the variance comes from seeing yours was only a year ago unless I filled out his data sheet wrong? Hah.... I will call him with your info at hand. Cheers

I just ordered a Donaldson Top Spin precleaner , it will be interesting to see how it goes, the Donaldson seems to have a larger flow range than the Sy Klone.
I would also recommend the Sy Klone 9001R as it is the slightly larger flow than the 9001 SyKlone but I have no idea if anyone has had any flow problems with either size.
I suppose if the fuel economy changed or if the exhaust was very black may be an indication.....
