    smittybilt winch

    Hi
Has anyone fitted a smittybilt x20 winch to a new defender.
Just tried fitting mine but its really tight against the lower grill area.
plus were did you fit the control pack.
They not really designed for the defender but it almost fits so i'm sure it can be done.

When I got my ARB bar I asked what the winch install kit they have listed in the price list and if it was necessary. He looked it up and it included a strengthening brace for the lower part of the grill which needs to be cut for most winches.

I'm looking to get the same winch very soon so if you could post up the results of your install that would be tops.

I have been looking at winches for my tdci which has the new style ARB bar
It seems all the x20 should fit but the bit of plastic will need some massaging.
As it sits below the bar why will you not simply trim it to fit winch?

Regarding the solenoid I'm a fan of putting them up out of the muck. Up on drivers guard under cover plate looks like a possibility for me?

Out of interest what makes the smittybilt attractive. I have been looking for a winch and would be keen to understand what makes that model appeal.

For me it's the lifetime warranty, ip68 rated and less than 1/2 the price of warn.

I have only read good reviews and looks like its worth a try.

I don't know the price ranges at ARB, but looking at Amp draws at around the 2700kg mark, the Smitty's 270A result is very good compared to others there.

It also cost $1000 and cane with everything!! Including the ability to use the remote wirelessly or wired. And it came with synthetic rope...
Its just annoying that it doesnt fit straight up considering when i bought it the guy (business) i bought it from said it would fit when i told him it was going in to a defender bar.

Unfortunately i have no come back as the winch has been sat around for nearly a year waiting to be fitted.

As I mentioned in my previous post I have been looking for a while. When I asked about the smittybilt the guys at arb said that it was "never going to fit" so I discarded the idea. I am keen to know how you get on

I was hoping there was a way not to trim. When I offered up the winch looks like its only a little bit out. Will try again next day off and see.
Control box under the wing woukd be good, how would you secure it.

so far fitment not going good. i have removed the grill and with the winch held in place its very close to the a/c fan.
the grill will need to be cut at the bottom.
The winch does not go up to the bar as the casting for the feet hit the vertical web inside of the bar. i think it can be spaced with a 5mm packer.
If it goes in then would need to space the bar out to give better clearance for the fan and the grill going back in.
Think if starting from scratch with a new bar be easier as the spaceing can be done when fitting up.
have pictures will try post them later.
