Yes, it's quite easy to get under 10 on the highway, with that lovely V8 "ticking over" at just under 2000rpm,....but around the city, or give it some stick, and it's a bit different,...never bothered me one iota,..i just loved the V8 experience,...always have.

Yup the old 76 statesman was on lpg as I used to commute from Wollongong to Sydney and it was cheaper than a Camry to run , and a lot more fun:D
Fyi Talking to a friend who put an ls1 into a patrol he said there is a bible for using the ls engines for conversions called..... Chevy Ls conversion handbook.
As some of you might be aware I have sold my Defender, the new owner took delivery Saturday.
I have purchased a D4 so I will be putting this thread on the back burner. I ended up getting my SDV6 just not in the form of a Defender.
However with no rush I will be looking for a td5 Defender that I can restore and transplant the LS3 and auto box into.

I do huge kms in my Defender. Almost 60,000 in 18 months - 2014 puma since new. I find it extremely comfortable. The seating position is the best of any vehicle I've ever driven. The four coils / four disc brakes make it a pleasure to drive. It feels nimble and poised in every situation. I like the robust simplicity of coils over air and it puts all vehicles with leaf sprung rear ends to shame. It's so quiet compared to my old 300tdi. No doubt a D4 is quieter, but also heavier and with less payload capability.
No doubt the SDV6 is a dream to drive! I suspect this is what decided you actually, given the thread title! Everything's a trade off, but I find the Defender 2.2 heaps powerful enough in that relaxed Defender kind of way. Sure with a huge load and a big heavy trailer you need to drop down to fifth or fourth more often, but that's healthier for the box anyway. Overall I find Defender extremely comfortable for long journeys and I prefer its versatility. And of course it's character is unmatched. Interested to know if D4 drivers form a relationship with their vehicles in the same way?
SDV6 in a Defender? ...sure I wouldn't say no if it was an easy conversion. But given that it looks like it isn't, I'd choose Defender over engine any day. And my reasons are clearly different than yours. Enjoy your new D4 Babs! Will look forward to hearing all about it.

I've been following this thread with interest. The demise of my TD5 is far from imminent, but it'll happen one day.
I think the 3.2 Ford donk would fit the bill for me. Compared to a tweaked TD5, it should be smoother, just as torquey, maybe even more fuel-efficient, with better parts availability than an (by then!) ancient TD5.
For an outback tourer, I've no interest in a V8 Defender.
I'd like to mate it up to the R380, and detune the 3.2 down to 380 Nms. Chip it to get as flat a torque curve as possible. It'd be easier to drive I'm thinking. Maybe a decent oil cooler on the gearbox.
But I've never poked my head underneath a Ranger/Everest, not sure if anything will clobber a Defender front driveshaft.
Anyway, just food for thought.
