I know a Patrol owner with a Cummins, like all conversions done to factory spec it wasn't a weekend job.I feel the simpler County/Tdi model is the way to go with an LS3. Pat

I was going to say, the previous post didn't seem correct as lots of 1300kg VB-VL commodores where getting away with ls1 conversions engineered. Thanks for that!:D
One other thing, a ls1-3 isn't a cast iron block, it's alloy, like the old 3.5-4.6 disco/RRC/p38 donks , they where around 150kg bare, the ls v8's go from about 185kg because of this it is 30-50ish kg lighter than a td5 or puma.
A RRC 3.5 straight exhaust, sounded good but still didn't go that quick but was a manual so fun. 2 Holden 5.0 v8's one an old 76 statesman on lpg with a Holley 650 that was nice and a 94 statesman which could almost keep up with a 98 wrx ( my fathers)in a straight line. It was comfortable ,reliable and fast, but at our old house because of the driveway it scraped it's arse!:D also 6, now 7 don't fit in a 5 seat car.
I've driven a few friends v8 older fords but they didn't grab me.
What have you had?
Well, quite a few.
My first car was a 1948 Ford Super Delux (side valve), when all my mates had FJs etc!! Then I bought an absolutely mint original black 1951 Ford Custom "Twin Spinner", which I sold for twice as much as I paid for it. never been that lucky sinse! Then a 1948 Ford Mercury.
Then I got married & had no money, so just ordinary stuff for a while.
But after a LLLOONNNG time I bought an HDT VK Group A (bluey), next,... HDT VK Director, VL Group A Plus Pack, VN Group A, CV8 Monaro, HSV VZ GTO (6L LS2), AMG C63 Performance Pack etc,...and now I drive a Defender,....which DEFINITELY is not a V8!
If we had kept the C63, I think I would definitely have lost my license, not from doing anything dangerous, but that car was just so fast,...just a dab on the loud pedal, police coming towards you,...and ya're gone.

"Defender Ha ha ha". Lol.
I can see your point.
Let me tell you, I would've loved to have owned something like the 500HP C63 when I was growing up, I would've had a ball,....but these days, compared to when I was growing up, ya just can't use it ,...anywhere,...even when it's safe.
When we were leaving car shows, in the "old days", there'd invariably be a few young kids on the gate giving you the "spin 'em up" sign, which we would do, with a bit of opposite lock, a bit of smoke, etc etc,....ALL GOOD, for everyone,...but definitely not today.
So, I'm enjoying 90KW in a way in which I never thought possible,.....until I owned a Defender,....when the world changed.

GM Gen 4 conversion including LS - Defender Source
And here is the 50th I suspect Defender 50th LS2 / 6l80 Build - Defender Source
Great pick up Steane,...jeez, this conversion is not for the faint hearted, that's for sure.

I actually think it's pretty straight forward for the earlier cars. Pumas are a different story and I wouldn't bother.
I've always been interested in the idea and will definitely go this way if the 300tdi ever dies. Looks like it could all be returned back to original easily as well.
That chap Nick from the States has made it all pretty simple and turned it into a bolt in job that leaves the TC in it's original position. Easy dash options for the earlier cars as well.
Centre console is available from Ashcrofts and the auto shifter can be placed wherever you want because it's a cable shift.
I'd love to know what sort of economy the LS engines get in a Defender. In my HSVs I used to get just under 10L/100 on the highway and in the LS2 manual around 14L/100 around the burbs.
