    Puma Slick Shift

    Gday fellas;
    Has anyone fitted a Puma specific Slick Shift kit?
    They are available from the UK and if it's anywhere as effective as the unit I fitted to my MG, it would be a great modification to gear selection. Easier selection with far less throw.
    I think I'll research a bit more and will probably fit one.

    Haven't heard of it before - like you am interested to hear of any experiences.

    I know a few who have them and tell me it's a remarkable difference.

    It's on the shopping list for Mrs Tombies 90

    Good to hear.
    Thanks Tombie. As mentioned, I fitted one to my MG and it made the gear throw so much better and accurate.
    Defiantly on my to do list.

    Was going to say I read somewhere about them fouling on the dash in a Puma - then noticed you had said "Puma specific", so all should be good.

    Must admit I'm not sure about these. Of themselves, they look a well made bit of kit, and I've looked at the maker's video that shows it really shortens up and speeds up the shift - no question there.

    But, is that the best way to go with this gearbox in this application? I mean, it's closer to a truck than a car, and I don't find it that long or imprecise a shift, especially given the vehicle it's in.

    I have had performance cars previously where I have worked to shorten/quicken up the shift (similar to other posters on this thread), but I'm not sure that it's a good idea here. If people have worn bushes in the shift mechanism, I see how this will be a huge improvement for them. But, the Defender seems to prefer slightly slower shifts - mine will graunch slightly going into second, even when warm, so is speeding that up good for the box? Couldn't it accelerate syncro cone wear? Or some other bits in there?

    Open question folks, would welcome the thoughts of others. I'm not against mods (I've got the BAS intercooler & remap), as I say I'm just not sure this kit is the best trick for this vehicle.

    I guess in answer to the 'quick' gear change...I have Yet to have an issue. Been in for, I am going to guess over a year! Really makes gear changing a pleasure. Small movement and easy to change gear...be it nice and slow or really fast....both which I could do before but now. It is more pleasurable to change gear! The stick is in virtual the same position when reaching for it....helpful when off roading....not having to reach around for it. Not sure it will wear things out any quicker...as said gear change can be slower as reduced movement but equals same time in changing when done at normal speed in pre fitment! It just is a big improvement in gear changing....for me!

    I put mine in yesterday, had a shocking rattle after I did it, took the gear stick back off and glued the weights just in case, took it for a drive and the rattle was still there, had a closer look and realised I had the gear stick on backwards . Took it off again filled the gear stick with grease and put it back on, no rattler now. As for the gear changing, the change is cleaner if that can explain it, did about 100k in it yesterday and this morning, it is a great improvement, still change gears the same way as I used to but it is just nicer, cant think of any technical terms to explain it, it is still a truck and still drives like one but the subtle change in the shifting is great, going through the suburbs with a million roundabouts it was nice.
