    Mike.
I don't read any mention of any shared componentry so they are related in some dimensions only.
L series is not 200/300 TDI.

If you read related development it states the td5 and L series use the same pistons and rods. The L series also use the same useless plastic head dowels.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_engines . This states they use the the same piston and rod assemblies
I also have a article from LRO about the td5, its a interesting read. The file is to large to post here but PM me your email and I can send it.

Ive edited this from earlier following a quick look at the o;haul manual for dimensions and tolerances. Wikipedia or the interpretation thereof relating to TD5 is incorrect

The part numbers are the same

These fit the Freelander 1 L series Diesel and the td5. I never said the 200/300tdi were the same just the L series was the base for the TD5 and there was carry over parts. The crank dimensions are the same, the crank couldn't be the same one is a 4 cylinder and the other a 5 cylinder.

Indeed. Ive just gone and given myself a clip over the ear for wasting my time on erroneously quoted side tracks on an already overly done topic.

I agree....it's comes down to many factors including your own personality.

If you want modern, go the TD5, if you want old school, go the 300TDi. Both have limitations and benefits.

The 300TDi suits me for simplicity and no engine electrics...but hey, I still sleep in a swag when I go bush!

My daily driver is a 1972 Peugeot 504 so old school suits me.

You need drive each vehicle and make your own mind up.

Thread closed, let's move on people!

They're both excellent engines. The 300Tdi is simpler, more economical, tolerates bad fuel better and responds well to regular servicing. The Td5 will give more power, but also needs regular servicing.
So, the real issue will be their condition and how much you have to spend on whatever you buy to make it reliable, because some budget for fixing it up will be required in either case, I predict.
I notice you will be mainly doing city usage. In the city, I'd prefer an auto to a manual. That said, have you considered an auto Disco I or II, with either the 300Tdi or Td5? Discos are cheaper than Defenders.
You could save money by going for a Disco auto 300Tdi and have money left over to spend on really fixing it up.
    Just a thought.
