Looks like a breather filter that's broken off - assuming for the rear diff, but I'm not 100% sure.
Guys,
Whilst running some cables through the back today I seemed to have snapped the rubber(?) end off some cable. Its not running to anything so I presume its not too important (at least for now) but I'd really like to know what I've broken.
Any one know what this is please?

It's a Puma isn't it?
It's definately a filter and it's not standard. The breather for the rear diff runs up through there somewhere but standard it's just a bit of nylon tube with an open end.
Looks like the previous owner has modified it to add a filter. So nothing to worry about.
Cheers,

Yes its a Puma jon3950.
Thanks guys, after googling 'diff breather filter' it looks like thats exactly what it is.
What do these breather filters do? Im sure they're inexpensive so if it's worthwhile I will just pick up a new one and change it over.
The standard rear diff breather on mine only went up to under the floor
down the back above the fuel tank, so if it's a breather it might be aftermarket.
Shouldn't a diff breather go forward to the engine bay, not inside the vehicle, where it could cause occupants to breath fumes from a hot diff?
Where that one is sitting, bugger all. There really isn't much airflow through these breathers. They are just there to deal with thermal expansion/contraction. The idea of the filter is to stop dust and crap getting into the diff, but the reality is the the breather tube is so long and thin its pretty unlikely anything will make it that far.
If you really want a filter on it, look at the Nugget Stuff one. Overkill really, but look really nice (I want one).
Cheers,
Jon
The bit that you have broken is a pneumatic exhast silencer. Silences compressed air coming out of valves on machinery. They also stop stuff getting back into the valve.
That unit looks like a Mac Valves unit. SMC , Festo, Master Mac or Norgren will have them. You should also be able to pick them up from bearing suppliers. Come in plastic or brass. The plastic units are normally a finer filter. I am sure fleabay will come up with some if you want to replace the original
Cheers Glen
DiscoMick I have no idea! From looking at it, not much could come from it anyway. The part thats snapped off is rubbery so it cant 'breath' all too much.
I just looked them up...considering I have no idea what they really do and nobody seems alarmed by me breaking it so far....$125 seems a little excessive so I'll probably pass and get a basic one (Read: Cheaper)![]()
Looks more like the fuel tank breather. The puma had lots of issues with a poorly placed fuel tank breather causing water to enter the tank. Re routing it up behind the taillamp area was a good fix.
