If you are taking it back to them for warranty reasons (that is, to have the protection of a warranty), and the warranty is not being honoured, then what is the use of going in the first place?
Yeah.... I was actually expecting to get it fixed..

    My bad

Mine felt like the T/C was going to fall out just before the adapter failed.Mine is a 2011 model with 160,000 hard K's and it's just getting a rear end knock from the A frame ball joint. The slack you are describing is not normal, give Dazza a ring or East Coast Rover,I've dealt with both and both will forget more about Defenders than the dealers will ever know.Saying that Barbagallo's at Osborne Park looked after us very well. I wouldn't worry about this too much. From both of our dealings at the same dealer, I think they'd be a bit more accommodating/helpful!
However there are lots of good landy places in the east of Melbourne, so I guess Ritters would certainly be worth a go.

    Pocket,
From reading his posts on this subject, I can only echo Pat's advice to go and see Dazza. AT least he may be able to identify the root cause which you could then go back and try and get the dealer to sort under warranty??

Answer - abso-bloody-lutely ! This place is invaluable.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Haha hence I upped my subscription to gold recently. The advice you can get on here is invaluable.

The amount of money I've spent as result of the knowledge gained on here, well, it would pay for a verrrry nice holiday. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

    Pickles.
    Brighton Landrover service is impeccable.
They went miles beyond what other companies would have done when I had a clutch rattle.
I wont take it anywhere else. I'm not affiliated at all with them, just a happy customer. pm me if you wish.

    Back to topic.

I second going to another dealer and getting another opinion.
Yes all Defenders have a backlash, the degree how much varies between models, no of km's and who put it together in the first place.
Backlash can be minimised sometimes by driving skill, replacing bits, greasing other bits etc..

When I took my 6m old 2015 in for a clutch rattle, they ended up changing the clutch and pressure plates twice.
When I got the car back, it drove way better than it had done since new, not only was gear changing smoother but backlash was reduced.
I then, self fitted some Ashcroft Axle flanges and the backlash was further reduced.

Drive another "good" car for a comparison.

Just gotta get it back from them now. The story keeps changing so much I can't keep up.

Firstly there was a problem with backlash that only mine and another MY15 had. There was no fix.

Then on Friday there was still an issue and they were waiting on advice from Land Rover tech assist in how to fix it.

On Monday it was 'normal'. They all do it. Suck it up. No fix.

And then when loneranger called them this morning the story changed again. There is no issue apparently.

And the story given to him this arvo is that there is still no issue but they're going to escalate it to Land Rover tech assist on the basis that we have 3 Defenders in the family and won't accept the load if bollocks that they're telling us because we have 2 others to compare it to.

Got a good mind just to go and collect it anyway unfixed, take it to Dazza and be done with them.

I feel for you. In a world of crap customer service no one holds a candle to LR in my experience.

My 2010 Deafener suffered badly from that awful backlash. As far as I'm concerned it's a badly assembled drive train (in fact the whole bloody vehicle is badly assembled) slapped together by a workforce that couldn't give a ****.
However, Barbagallo changed the rear half shafts once and gave me a new transfer case at 98K (sound like bagpipes coming from somewhere underneath) but said afterwards the slop was no longer going to be a problem fixable under warranty!
In the end I got Darren (DazzTd5 or Aztech4x4) to change the half shafts (plus output shaft) and driven members for upgraded items. Vehicle runs well now with virtually no slop.
Now our Deafener is at last up to the standard the 300Tdi and Td5 were as far as drive train is concerned.
And it's up for sale but the Cook may kill me first......
    AlanH.
