Oil in the turbo and wiggly turbine...how much is too much?

The turbo on my 300tdi is basically filthy with oil - there is a pool of it in the bottom of the turbo - and the turbine can be 'wiggled' a few mm up and down...I cant do a turbo boost test as the engine is on the garage floor - are there any thoughts on the state of this? and are rebuild kits a viable solution if required. Thanks guys appreciate your views.

That does look a little crusty.
There will be a LITTLE movement in the turbo bearing, which is normal.
The oil could be from the turbo or the poorly designed crankcase breather bolted to the rocker cover.
You can get a replacement CHRA for the turbo.
This is the one I purchased. 18months now without issue.

Still had oil through the intercooler pipes, so I replaced the crankcase breather with a Provent 200 and now have zero oil in the intercooler and pipes.

The other 2% made it home.

Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.

    thanks Tony,

I think I'll just clean this all up for now and look into a Provent 200 also.

Hi JB, I think you turbo is knackered if you can move the compressor wheel up and down any more than a mm. the seals are most likely damaged as well when the shaft has that much play. I have a couple of 2nd hand spares here in bris, (PM if your interested). I don't think a new/second hand turbo would be hard to get or very expensive. cheers simmo
