Take the cover off and unscrew the drain a couple of turns. The fuel will come out the sides as well not just the little pipe, so have a biggish container ready.
Ive recently had problems with water and I've fitted a 2nd filter, will get a water alarm in a couple of weeks.
I'm sure there are a hundred reasons for a bit of smoke, but this would be an easy check you can do your self.
If your only traveling 10 mins regularly then I'd reckon that would be your most probable cause

Very tired I went to the caravan and did not worry too much and forgot about it till the morning. Start up today (next morning) was the same and with the same smoke. now I was concerned, I revved it and the smoke went away but the slight rough run stayed.

When you say it had a bit of a heart beat at idle, was it hunting? (erratic idle). It could be pointing to the VCV on the fuel pump playing up. Plenty of threads here, and on DEFENDER2.NET - Index. It can also cause problems on start up, especially in the colder months.

No it was more like a miss running, but the car slightly shook and there was smoke. My pride and joy I hope all is well.

Today it was still fine, have not had chance to check the filter yet but will tomorrow and then keep monitoring it.

Also have a look in the air cleaner box.
    Cheers, Billy.

Signs that there might have been or still is a significant amount of water in there. Also could be some detritus in there which could have momentarily restricted air flow.
In any event, it's part of the system and can't be overlooked.
    Cheers, Billy.

You should clean the MAF with MAF cleaner, take it off spray it clean and replace. It sounds almost exactly what mine was doing. Mine is a 2.4 though.

I don't wish to cause alarm. At about 100,000km i had an injector problem with my MY10 2.4 resulting in a cracked piston and second piston scored. Since my problem i've come to learn of about 5 other Defenders (mainly 2.4's) about the same age/milage with injector issues causing serious damage (the 5 i speak of needed engine replacement). Incorrect fuelling can give you rough idle (you described it as a mis-fire). By and large i didn't notice any other issues with the engine i.e. down on power, excess smoke, until it started to overheat on innocuous flat roads cruising with light throttle. I'm not sure the ECU will pick up an injector fault as a fault code (someone else might be able to clarify). If yes, i'd put that on the list of things to check.

The EGR will show up as an engine fault code if its gummed up as they tend to stick. No DPF i believe before the MY15. MAF could be a culprit too.
